A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood! Bright & sunny. One problem....my turkeys are TRAITORS!!
Ran out into the backyard. Daisy was preening on the backporch rail. But Blossom, Marigold and Iris were GONE! Started calling for them. One of the guys next door yelled that they were in their yard. So Daisy & I headed over there to retrieve them. I about died....4 guys sitting in a row on a trailer with turkeys in their laps! Well...Blossom & Marigold were in laps, Iris was wedged between two of the guys. The boys had just got back from TURKEY HUNTING! One of them has parents in a rural area here. They got two birds & left them with his mom. Two of the guys live nextdoor, but the other two had not met the girls. They were blown away. Could believe how sweet they are. My neighbor was laughing saying they've ruined hunting for their two friends. And he wants to take Blossom with him when hunting because she's so vocal. Said he'd just sit under a tree with her on a leash. He was kidding....that's not legal. I was pleased when I called them they hopped down & followed Daisy & I back to our yard. They are good girls....just nosey!!

My cousin bales small squares across the road and at the farm they live at. They supply several boarding barns and her horses. But they use a ton of chemicals and I try to be organic. I do get a few bad bales from her to compost.
I guess technically I'm organic because I only use ditch water on the fields. Two fields get horses during fall and winter, spreading horse apples where they may. The closest field gets turkey visitors searching for bugs. The 22 acres across the road get some ditch water and that's all..... It's mostly dryland. We are on a yearly lease for the hayfields and so you know the year we decide to do major improvements is the year we loose the lease to a developer. Ha.

My cousin sprays for weeds several times a year. Years ago, before I went organic, I tried to mulch tomatoes with some rained on hay. Tomatoes turned yellow and died. She uses grazon, supposed to fine to feed after a while when sprayed.

We bale it all, lol. Not enough weeds to make a difference to the horses so we just don't worry about it. I suppose there's a chance something might come from the river, though.
