A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hello, I️ am torn upon whether I️ need to assist my Turkey poult with hatching. It is part of a batch of turkeys that was due 4 days ago that I raised in the incubator. I️ opened it so I️ could see if it was still alive. There is still some liquid in the egg around the edges and it appears that the white line that I️ circled is drifting back and forth. I’m assuming that means that it is still alive. There are no sudden jerks or movements. The first picture was it this morning and the other picture is it now. I’m not sure if I️ killed it by opening it too early or if it just absorbed all those veins that fast. I’m not sure what to do.
I️ was wondering, do I️ need to assist hatching or be concerned by the liquid around the edge of the egg shell?View attachment 2187739View attachment 2187740

Those veins look absorbed but at this point, there's really not much you can do besides wait and watch. If that membrane turns brown and stiff, then definitely help.

My rule of thumb is, if it is strong enough to pip on its own but doesn't progress I will assist. Any unpipped eggs are discarded. Whatever the reason it isn't strong enough to pip is likely the reason it wouldn't survive if you assisted it out. A great deal of chicks I assist even when they pipped on their own end up not thriving and have to be culled anyway. Since you have already opened the egg you can finish slowly assisting it out, but being 4 days overdue it will probably be very weak and not thrive. When I am assisting a chick to hatch I go slow. I will peel a little back at a time if I am seeing blood. Once I see blood I stop and put the egg back in the incubator a while to give the blood in the vessels time to recede and dry up. In the second pic it looks like the blood has absorbed. If the membrane dries and gets stuck to the chick you can moisten it with warm water and a cotton ball to get it unstuck.

The liquid is just moisture from albumin. I would be concerned about the chick smothering to death at this point because from the looks of it you opened the egg at the air cell end. If you dont see its head to give it a breath and the blood has receded into its body, it will suffocate. If you touch the chick and there is no movement I would assume it is already dead. If you still see some movement, proceed to assist it out. Don't go to fast and if you see blood take a break.

I am finding all the turkey varieties and genetics very fascinating but I haven't mastered the Porters genetics calculator.

Hypothetically, if I mated a red bronze to a royal palm what would the resulting offspring look like?
It depends on which is the male and which is the female. It also depends on how the Red Bronze was made. There are lots of different ways to make a Red Bronze and they can have different hidden recessive genes.

Pretty Girl is hen raised so she has a leg up on other first time broodies. I bet co-parenting with her will help both of them figure out things. In the meantime they have a nice hang out spot. I hope they all come out so I can count babies.i know there is at least a dozen in there. Plus I wanna clear any dead away and dud eggs. I don't dare yoink them out because they would freak an smoosh babies.
One of the Sweetgrass hens had a skunk destroy her first nest. Her second nest was stolen by the Blue Slate hen. She made a third hidden nest which she seems to finally have gone broody on yesterday. The last egg count was 21 the day before. I suspect that some of the eggs aren't hers since there were a few days when the count increased by two eggs.

It is hatching day for three turkey eggs I managed to collect from my turkeys after I realized the hen was laying, but the Tom was eating the eggs.

I have hatched chicken eggs and always had 100% success with those that were fertile, but this has been a totally different experience. First, the eggs sat much longer that I’d like as I was waiting for chickens to hatch from the incubator. I don’t feel like I’ve been able to monitor their growth because I can’t see much when I candle, but the black shadow had been getting larger so I assume they’re developing fine. I did toss egg four on lockdown day because the veins had turned black. When I did autopsy, baby was no bigger than my thumb.

I’m now concerned because I usually see eggs rocking and hear peeping from my chicks leading up to hatching day. So far, nothing from the turkeys. Normal? Continue being patient ?

Normal, be patient.
