A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Thank you! :D

So if a Tom has a few turkey hens, will he still try to court and pursue chickens? I had hoped to run them together but if it isn't safe I won't. Do the turkey hens hurt chickens also? :(

We have very limited turkey experience with chickens. The backyard turkey we had in the past ran in the same area where our chickens were but where they weren't raised up together the turkey pretty much ignored the chickens.

They pretty much ignore each other, but occasionally, they will have spats.

I have one rooster and one turkey hen that hate each other, they each dedicated their lives to making the other miserable.

I had a rooster that ran 4 turkey toms away from an oak tree, I guess the rooster wants the acorns for himself.

They might get a few cuts and bruises now and then, but they do that within their own species too.

I have a chicken hen that I found a turkey hen beating her up. She has trouble walking on one leg still. This was early spring and I didn't see the start of it. The chicken raised poults last year and probably wouldn't take any guff from the turkey. Or a cockerel blew out her hip and the turkey went after a bird acting unusual.

The key to having turkeys and chickens together is to have lots of room, lots of obstacles and lots of hiding places. Also no blackhead is important.

@duluthralphie has lots of space, I have lots of space. Others have had turkeys kill chickens.
True,, I have lots of room. The coop is 40x80 with 18 ft to the rafters...

The rafter turkeys seldom walk on the earth or floor.

Hey guys, I have some wonderful news! I got a new job :) I'm putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow and won't have to deal with walmart and working in freezers anymore lol. I've been hired at the State Park just around the corner from my house. The pay is better and it's seasonal so I'll have off 4 months over the winter. I'll be outside cutting grass, cleaning bathrooms, and working on assorted projects. No more 4am either. 7-3, mon- Friday with rotating weekends :) I just had to share with all of you!

The turkeys area all doing good but I'm dealing with a night time predator. It was smart enough to get the bait out of the trap without getting caught last night and dragged the trap 30 feet. It annihilated my silkie pen the other night. I only had 3 hens survive.

Congratulations on the new job!

That's aweful about your silkies, do you think it could be a group of raccoons? I've heard they move traps and can free each other if only partially trapped. Can you stake the trap down?

Likely I will keep my turkeys penned separate from my chickens. The few turkeys I decide to free range with my chickens will have plenty of space. Thanks for the input!

Also I think my turkey poult is broken. At a month old I was hoping to see some strutting/displaying as I've heard both sexes will do that when young as a show of dominance. I even played some recordings of turkey hens calling and toms gobbling but my little poult just looked oblivious. Lol.

How young do your alls' poults start displaying? I think I am just a little impatient.

Not all poults will display.

Stinks about the predators
I had 5 poults disappear one night. So far I have gotten 10 coons

It all depends on the situation. My young toms are smart enough to not attract attention to themselves by strutting or gobbling due to adult toms being around.

Your poult may not even know what it is to be a turkey since it is being raised alone.
