Have you tried adding flour before it's boiling?
I used to get lumps in my gravy, but I'm not sure how I did that... I think maybe trying to add dry flour to it because of it not thickening enough? It's possible to sprinkle in a bit of flour very finely & not make a big blob... or lumps. This doesn't work well (for me) with corn starch, but I'm thinking you really aren't interested in corn starch lumps...

LOL I don't worry about lumps so long as it doesn't taste raw. Just wondering if the magical elf trys things the opposite of how normal people avoid lumps, he can replicate his mother's lumps
