A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Sold 30 extra jakes yesterday... the ones left are exponentially happier and quieter. It's amazing how much ruckus extra males stir up! It's mostly jennies and hens left. There are also unusual colors of jake I kept for fun.
Yes 30 will make it a much quieter. Still have about 32 jakes here left a few keeping for new breeding stock and others should be gone by Thanksgiving. Still have about 40 jennies and a few of them for new breeding stock and rest will probably be smoked. A lot of work smoking all of them but they go so fast can never seem to do enough to keep everyone happy.

Was able to go get my pumpkins for winter, picked 3 pick-up truck loads. I pile them in shade next to my compost pile and let them freeze. They last me all winter for feeding just break/cut them in half they love the seeds and pecking them until its just outer skin. Next will be a cabbage patch but I usually let them freeze in field before picking. Might be a whole field of them this year because its been so wet here they have not been able to pick them. I just drill hole through middle with my battery drill with long bit hang them from ropes with knot on bottom in each pen off the ground above snow so they can get at them. Gives them something green and helps keep them occupied and active in winter months. I also pick bags of field corn still on the cob and throw a few ears in each pen to make them work at picking corn off cob to give them things to do, and a little bit of scratch grains on very cold evenings. It does help a little with winter feed bill but mainly used to keep them active/healthy/warm the more there up and active the happier and warmer they stay. They always have a 24% game bird grower pellet available 24/7. They always seem to be fat and happy all winter long and more than ready for spring breeding.

I believe this one is a barred silver-tipped mottled black? Mother would be two-toes, a black winged Narragansett and the tri colored mottled slate is sire
The one at the bottom is a sister, oops. She may not be mottled

I'm jealous! Absolutely NONE of my birds, even the chickens and turkeys, like pumpkins. I have never been able to get them to even try it. The turkeys circle them like some kind of predator making their little wary noises. It's crazy! I wish I could get them to like them, honestly, I really like the idea of giving them treats like that they can peck on for awhile rather than just eat in a second.

Ya sometimes some of my young birds that never had them yet act the same way. I just throw them some of the seeds farther away from the split pumpkin so they get used to eating them and find out they really like them. Then kind of sprinkle the seeds up to pumpkin with some on top and tap the pumpkin with my finger like I'm pecking them, they seem to take to them after awhile then start pecking at pumpkin itself. But much easier to have older birds that already know what they are and have been eating them go after them then young birds just have to try them for themselves. Isn't it funny how they are with things they have never seen:lol:

This one is just a Mottled black. If it were a "barred" version, then there wouldn't be white feathers but bronze feathers.

Warning sad story and graphic pictures :hit:hit:hit
Just got back from California delivering pharmaceuticals as always. 🚛🚛🚛 Got home around 8am. It's Just a little past 2pm now. What a horrific and said day. When my husband and I pulled up in the drive I thought somthing was wrong because no turkeys, chickens or ducks came to great us as always. So we got out of the car and went around the house to fined a massacre. Blood and feathers every where. All my chickens, ducks and turkeys gone. Found one dead chicken. Then found one of my turkey hens on her back unable to upright herself. I ran to help her. Then my son found one down around the tree line with alot of her neck tour open but alive. My husband yells it's dogs. Dogs did this. The back yard full of tracks in the mud. My husband grabs two guns and gives me one. We start looking for servivers and body's. I still only have found one body. After about a hour my son finds another turkey hen. She is in bad shape too. Big amount of flesh and meat out of her back. Then we found one turkey Tom hiding in a dog house the ducks use for egg laying. He's beat up a bit but not bad. He's in shock I think. We keep finding chickens wandering around toward the house. No idea where they are coming from. Still have alot missing. Found all the ducks. Some was in the next door neighbors pond. Some in the cat house. My pour babies. Still missing half my chickens and one turkey Tom and one turkey hen.
We are going to do the SSS method. Shot shovel say nothing. The sheriff told us about this method.
😭 the next door neighbors just came up and found one of my turkeys. She's dead.
We called a bird Dr a few minutes ago and waiting for her to call us back she does make house calls.
Body cout is up to 3 now and it's just after 3pm.
