ok, yes I see your point, but some is still available. I was on the Chick-Chick and it said 2017.

My TS still has the tylan 50 and 200, as I just bought them. oh well.

Hey all. Haven't been on BYC in awhile because we have an awesome local forum which usually suits my needs. But I came across this feed and thought I would ask your advise if I could.

I have a flock of about 125 that have had respiratory crud for awhile. I tried duramycin for a few weeks since that's what I had on hand and it did nothing. I ordered some (a bunch actually before the Rx requirement) of tylan powder and it's on its way. But I was rummaging through the medicine cabinet and woohoo! I found some tylovet I had totally forgot I had. Being a pack rat pays off sometimes.

So I started them on tylovet (generic tylan) 2 days ago. I used the 1 teaspoon per gallon dosing.

Let me preface things by saying I am a RN and know how to mix medicine and understand dosages.

So here is my question...I'm using 5 teaspoons to mix 5 gallons a day. I noticed yesterday I only have enough powder left for another couple of days...maybe 3. If the whole package is supposed to make 50 gallons then it should last me 10 days using 5 gallons a day. I'm afraid I'm overdosing my chickens.

Let me assure you that I am only using a teaspoon per gallon....no more.

Thanks everyone! And happy new year!

One teaspoon weighs how much? 3 grams? It's 100% tylosin, so 3000 mg tylosin if it weigh 3 grams. The daily dose for a chicken is 50 mg per pound per day (110 mg/kg per day).

Thanks Kathy. The volume in the bag still doesn't add up. But I'm going to have faith that 1 teaspoon per gallon is correct. After 2 days of treatment my birds aren't dead from overdose so that's good.

Thanks for your help!

I've weighed a bunch of powders, but I haven't weighed any tyolosin. One veterinary reference says this:

The powders I have weighed usually weigh between 2.5 to 3.7 grams per teaspoon.

Found the answer via Google and here it is in case anyone else ever needs help with it:

Tylan is water soluble powder containing 100 grams of tylosin tartrate per container. Labeled for chickens and turkeys in the treatment of chronic respiratory disease.
Dosage for poultry:- 100 grams per 50 gallons of drinking water for 3 days.
Also widely used for kennel and cattery treatments but not labeled for such use.
Usual dosage: One teaspoonful per 5 gallons drinking water or 1/4 teaspoon per 100 pounds body weight.
Do have to break it down again after it is mixed 1 tsp per 5 gallon ?
