I've got her! I finally convinced him to give them up, mostly becasue he's decided he'd rather have quail, which is bad, but at least they do better caged. However, when I went over to get them, I discovered he had been breeding rabbits, and now he has cages upon cages of them piled up in his room, with tens of rabbits jammed in each cage. This is on top of the rest of his animals. I have a friend calling animal control on him for me and reporting him as a hoarder so I don't get mixed up in it.
Anyway, about her. She's not in complete quarantine, since she hasn't been outside or around other birds to catch anything. The biggest thing I'm worried about it mites and lice and other creepy crawlies, so she's in a "look, don't touch" pen for a while that I hastily threw together. The other chickens can see her and start getting used to her. It's unfair to introduce a lone bird to my flock, but I can't help that now. Poor thing, the last thing she needs is another ordeal, but there's no getting around it. She's already enjoying the bigger space and the food - you can see below that she's been scratching in the dead pine needles and eating so much her crop is bulging. Here she is. Remember, she's at least eight months old. Her time in the cage has really stunted her.
She is really pretty. Maybe you should call her Second Chance. I think your hoarder friend needs to be turned in for his sake as well as the animals. Hoarders need help moderating their lives and can't do it alone.
yeaaa!!!! good for you!!!! yup, I like the name Chance too. (second chance). She is so sweet looking! I bet she will be a good girl for you even though you are getting one good 'stink eye' in the last photo!!!!!
ps. If you cant keep her and need a spoiled rotten home for her let me know! I always have room for another 'rescue'.
Well, he was calling her Penelope so I've just been calling her Penny. Fishnet, if my birds are really mean to her, I'd happily give her to you. However, my girls are generally an easygoing bunch, and I've already caught them hanging out in groups by her pen talking to her. The boys aren't exactly disappointed to have a new girl around, either
they will have her as a best friend in no time then. that is so cool. She will have buddies. cant wait to see more pictues of her to come. I bet she is in seventh heaven with you being outside in the fresh air and being able to scratch around.
She is a beautiful bird. I have 3 buff orpingtons, and they are my sweetest birds.
We have a neighbor across the street who has 2 goats, and he keeps one tied to a post in the middle of a field behind his house, and he kept that goat out in the hot hot sun, and the freezing cold rain. So we reported him, and now the goat gets to be in the fence with his other goat. His excuse for keeping the goat out there was "He likes it out there, he chooses that." biggest lie i've ever heard. But after reporting him he has to take care of it or animal control is taking it away.
What I'm saying is that, animals who are confined and not taken care of don't deserve that life. Your neighbor needs to be reported. I know it's a hard thing to do, and you will probably lose him as a friend, but the animals lives will be MUCH better after.
Just keep us posted, and good luck with your new hen
