but i do see your point..if you CAN afford it, and you are just grousing about the price then you need to quit being such a tightwad or move on.

So you change the system so they can have access to fresh, healthy, local food.

thats not going to happen any time soon. people are under the impression that the government really cares about the welfare of its people.

I read a study that free range chickens aren't happier after all. The stress associated with free ranging due to keeping a watchful eye out for predators is the same for a chicken sitting in a cage with few worries. They did this by measuring the chemical associated with stress in birds.

I know there are days when my ducks refuse to leave the barnyard and venture out onto the pond. They will huddle under the safety of the brush around the coop. These are the times I see there are predators in the area such as bald eagles, hawks, etc.

Canard? Is that you? Welcome back.

Even if I accept the conclusions of this particular study (a quick google reveals alternate studies that come to different ones about battery hens), what it says that birds in battery cages live with the same amount of stress as birds in high predator areas, without the benefit of doing all the things birds like to do, like scratch in the dirt and chase bugs.

Still sounds like free range birds are happier, to me.

I think most inner city families could keep coturnix quail quite easily, and have access to eggs and meat that way. They could grow some kinds of vegetables in containers, but not all. Tomatoes, squash, beans, could be grown in five gallon buckets on the patio, or under grow lights. Some inner city folk are actually already have fully operational grow setups in their homes, but they grow other stuff, not food. You can get the complete setups off ebay, shipped to your home, so I don't buy the theory that city folk can't eat fresh, home grown produce and eggs and meat. Dairy, now... let's not even go there... extremely limited options...

i believe they choose to grow "other stuff" because they are able to catch a higher premium for "that" than they would for food products. and if they are growing for their own consumption they obviously perceive they are essentially "saving" by spending less money by producing their own "other stuff" than they are by growing actual food products

i do completely agree that as far as growing vegetables outside in small containers... most everyone w/ a porch can do that!!

"Well, when you find a rusty spark plug and an old finger nail in your store bought chicken don't come complaining to me."

Goodness gracious!

I hear ya.I used to have the Ton's Of duck's and bird's.I don't know about the avg price for meatie's as I sold mine as breeder's mostly. But then I had a lot of bantam's as well. The AVG.going price here for layer hen's are around $8-$10.We have been thinking cutting the duck flock cause DH got too many mallard's.I Don't wanna overcharge but geez He paid $4.25 each as babie's in early spring. Most of these people have NO CLUE how much work it take's to get a bird up to either breeding or to eat. They want a full grown duck for $6!Yea sure the sleazy slaughter house's can can those bird's do not have one ounce of love or human communication other than being shoved into cramped cage's etc.Yes I sold ducks and stuff to self sufficient communitie's here I wont name them and I was Adamnet about those bird's.I was told they would only be used as breeder's for future food use. They need to learn a true value lesson once.If my grandson's were going hungry Yep I can go process any one of my bird's without ill repute and I wont' even think for one second how much that bird cost me or anything.Go Git Yer Own Chicken! If ya can't Can't Kill It You Shouldn't Be eatin IT!
