I remember years ago, when I recieved food stamps, I would shop for the whole month, and yeah I had a couple of carts worth of food and yeah people would look at me funny, and think that we were eating great, But in reality, we went hungry alot! And now that Im employed and have been for many many many years, we still go hungry alot. You just really don't know what is going on with individuals , unless of coarse, you know them personally so I try not to judge others on what they are buying, another thing is that when I recieved food stamps they weren't on one of these cards they were actually paper and I would stand in line and give each of the kids 1 dollar to buy a piece of candy so I could use the change for soap or toilet paper. And people thought we were just waisting their tax dollars. Bottom line is that there is alot of good out there and alot of bad and I have seen both sides as many have, On the other hand I worked with a woman who had one child more than me, got like 700.00 a month in food stamps and Medical for her children even though we have Medical insurance through work, and was constantly wearing new clothes and big ole jewelry (expensive) . and driving a cadilac . She is no longer employed with my company because of stealing , her husband is in prison for drugs and I think she went to jail too, for a time anyway, so let folk do what they will because what goes around comes around in the end. Good or bad.

I could say a whole lot but I won't because I don't want to get into trouble. the reason I have chickens is to help supply food to my family. the reason I have internet is because my 2 daughters are trying to go to our local community college and they have online classes, both of which got scholarships for this. if it were not for that and the fact I have to have a phone because of my mother in law has severe health issues and so does my dad and myself I would not have it.
Not everyone is out there to abuse the system.

Have a very nice night and God bless you

Before this thread gets locked I wanted to say that I admire the hosesty
and humility of the people who admit to have needed assistance. I'm not
sure I could do the same.

On the other hand I have parents that I've fallen back on many a time.
That is a blessing many don't have.

As an example of wasteful regulation. When we were foster parents the young foster children were eligible for WIC till their 3rd birthday. They were entitled to milk, cheese, healthy cereal that very few kids will eat, eggs, peanut butter or dry beans and frozen fruit juice. Dairy items and fruit juice were limited to store brands. The funny thing was they determined that each child should have 1 and 3/4 gallons of milk. So we had to buy 1 gal, 1 1/2 gal and 1 qt of milk vs 2 gals. Yes we could've gotten 3 gallons for the same price. Bureaucracy at work. We have now adopted 5 of those children so WIC is a long way behind us.

DH just got back from the grocery store. He started gripping about how much food costs. I do most of the grocery shopping here. He got a gallon of store brand milk, cereal, some tooth paste, hotdogs,a bag of chips, some soup,a thing of Ovaltine, and some carrots and it was over $40. Oh, and some tp.

Sometimes people need help. I'm glad that a small portion of my tax dollars go to those that are less fortunate. Someday I may be in that position with my family. Nobody knows what ill fate may befall them. The amount of money lost to those that are abusing the system is nothing compared to what is wasted on defense and bail outs to crooks. Entitlements are a very small part of where our tax dollars are abused. Most people that receive entitlements get by on a very meager existence. Be happy you have the money to complain about giving them.

I've had to be on food stamps before, never qualified for financial help though. I live in such a desperate area it hurts to see some of my kids in my class. When we delivered our food baskets it really brought it home to my son. We have those who abuse it, we have those who need it and can't get it.
With the economy the way it is, it's only going to get worse. The number of people carrying the EBT (benefit card) card is growing.
When I see it being abused and I realize how many people get reduced benefits because NM is so poor I want to scream at them in front of the whole world and tell them I know how much money they make, I know the drugs they spend them on, because I know them.
I know how you feel Sterling, and it really bothers me too.

I'd like to commend everyone in this thread so far for doing a good job posting their own experiences and feelings, rather than attacking other members or members' viewpoints.

As long as the discussion continues in this fashion, we'll keep this thread open.
