I've actually reported someone I know to the welfare department for benefits abuse, on more than one occasion, and nothing is ever done about it.

This person is capable of working but just won't. They don't have a regular place to stay, just floats from place to place staying with whomever will put up with them for the time being. They supposedly get $300+ a month in food stamps (for a single person) and every month as soon as the food stamps come in, they're sold for 50% of value to go buy lord knows what with the money.

Ticks me off!!!!

when we were on food stamps, we ate really well too. i hated being in line though because of the looks we would get..almost as if since we were on food stamps, we should be content with the cheapest, plainest food possible.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying they complain that 550 isn't enough for two weeks... well duh, add some pasta or salads instead of 2" thick steaks. Then their kids wouldn't have to starve for the remainder of the month waiting on more free food.

oh no i dont mean you..im talking about people making snide comments at the store. no i see what you are saying!

I'm 46. Growing up, my mother worked three jobs to feed three kids because she had to leave her alcoholic husband in WA and move back to ME to be close to her family. She relied on food stamps for a short period - maybe about 8 months - and got right off assistance when she could. It was never intended to be a way of life, but only assistance to get families through the worst of times. These day, people won't work three jobs - they won't do what's necessary because there's an attitude of "I deserve help from the tax payers" rather than one of "I don't need anybody's help, I can fend for myself"...I watched my mother work her butt off to feed three kids and she had three by the time she was 24 - all of them by the same father who was her husband by the way - and when she had to leave him because of HIS alcohol abuse, she put her kids first.

You don't see that these days. That's not saying there are none out there who understand the value of hard work and the example that brings to kids, but the atmosphere is one of entitlement rather than a gracious gratitude for the opportunity to earn it.

well I am sorry my dh works every single day and we still don't get enough to buy food yes I receive food stamps a whole 33.00 a month to feed 4 people. his pay is not that much and by the time taxes are taken out and you pay electric bill water bill phone bill and god knows what else there is nothing left to buy groceries with. you get paid 400.00 2x's a month then pay 200.00 electric bill 100.00 car insurance, 120 water bill and then the other necessities toliet paper, dish soap shampoo laundry soap something to mop your floors in bath soap and what ever is needed tell me how can you buy food on that. well 33.00 don't buy much but it will buy a bag of beans, flour and corn meal and maybe a can of shortning

You don't see that these days.

Oh yes I do. As a teacher I see many parents who are working more than one job to make ends meet. We were having an informatonal meeting for parents. This parent attended but caught my eye to ask me a couple of questions because she had to get going to her second job. She had worked all day, run home, fixed dinner, come to the meeting and was heading from our meeting to her next job.

Don't lump everyone together. Just like folks with food stamps, some need them for a short time, some longer, and others are the ones who abuse the system just because they can.

Try $2000 a month just for your mortgage, then see how much food you can buy. At one time, it was doable. Now, it's not. Try $150/mo electricity bill, and then $250 every two weeks for oil to heat your house because of below 0 temps that are below average. How about $40 every 2-3 weeks for chicken feed? Look at $250 a month for propane just to run the stove and water heater. The wood from your property didn't cut it for the winter, so count on $350 per cord for wood. Can't afford to live this way? And we're not counting the credit card bills for stuff you had to buy with credit because your cash was taken up with buying food. And forget about the $700 property tax bill...or the $800 home and vehicle insurance bill. Most of you don't see that because it's included with your mortgage - but we see it, and pay it every six months, and know what it costs. Well, do what they're trying to do by squeezing us out of the country by moving to the burbs into "sustainable" housing. That'll work. Sure. Then, they've got you.

We're all hurting. We need to stop complaining and just do something about it. Complaining gets...where...???

you could get a smaller whole chicken, a bag of potatoes, bag of flour, some margarine, a small container of milk, some frozen vegetables and some oatmeal and sugar..roast the chicken and make mashed potatoes and gravy and vegetables, then take the carcass, let it simmer all day, make some homemade noodles to toss in there, and if by some luck you have any left over, make chicken pot pie the next day! eat oatmeal for breakfast and make bisquits to go with it etc.
that will get you through a few days at least
