I saw this was posted by a few people Homemade Candler Recipe , so I made my own but with a 50 watt flood light bulb and a cardboard box. I found the bulb was getting too hot so I used a toilet paper tube over the candling hole to keep some of the heat away from the egg. I only had 1 Americana egg and my couple banty eggs I couldn't candle.

floridachickhatcher - Sorry to hear you lost a few. I hope the other 5 do make it. My lock down is also on Monday. Then the hard part begins...waiting

Smart BF! Sorry you're having such a hard time. I'm sure you'll get at least one though. Infertile eggs are not your fault.

We did the same and it does well. I also have a small LED flashlight from COSTCO that I can also use as a candler.

Well I finally broke down and made a better candler. I found another quitter which I thought was viable. I'm happy to report all 17 (3 banty eggs and the rest a mix) have movement and look like chicks. I also returned the digital thermostat for a more accurate one that has been working out well. I can't believe lock down is coming soon and maybe some peepers. This is so cool

Oh my gosh.... day 21 is next Saturday.... I am flipping out. Seriously, I think I'm gonna have a fit. Wednesday night is lockdown? I don't think so. I'm not ready for this!

But seriously, if something goes wrong, I'll be devastated.

So glad your chicks are doing well ChickieWoo! Can't wait to see your babies when they hatch!

Florida, I hope those 5 make it! What are they?

Oh I also have a question! What can i put on the grate of the bator under the eggs so the chicks don't have to be wire right away? Can I put a couple washcloths or paper towels down?

I put some cheap washcloths from Building 19 on the wire when I had my old LGs years ago. Since then I've upgraded to a cabinet and I put paper towels on the wire in the hatcher just to make clean up easier.

Thanks for sharing. I was wondering the same thing because that grating would be pretty hard to clean.

Thanks a lot! I'll be putting some paper towels down. You've been very helpful with every question I have had. Thank you!
