AHH! Only two weeks until my foal is due! *link to video Pg13!!* EOWYN

After about 90 days the nutrition in the mare's milk really goes down. Mostly people keep them on the mare longer because the mare teaches them so much about how to be a horse, appropriate herd behavior, etc. It's almost just as good for them to be weaned and turned out with a mixed herd. (young horses to play with and a few solid old horses to smack them around when they get too rowdy)

Talk to your breeder and do some reading about feeding a young horse. There are very few parts of the US where grass will supply all the nutrients a young growing horse needs. They don't necessarily need more calories, especially in breeds prone to OCD (a growth disorder) but small amounts of a complete feed and/or a ration balancer (a type of feed which is designed to be fed to horses on grass, that provides extra protein and all the nutrients they need but can't get from grass)

We feed almost all our horses, starting at 4mo, Purina's Enrich32 http://horse.purinamills.com/products/Enrich32.asp but if there's any OCD showing up in the line you might want to look for Enrich16, which is lower protein but the same vitamin and mineral content.

Sorry if you already knew this.

We breed a rare breed called Bashkir Curly Horses and have been around the block a time- or ten, or so.

Young stock is a mystery to me. I grew up on a farm- without horses. Grampa had been laid open by spooked horses pulling a plow and wouldnt indulge me to have any- plow or not. Sooo, ask me about young anything else and I'd be able to tell you. But young horses not so much. The barns/people/horses i've spent all these years working with were much older than four months! lol.

Thanks, i'll look into that feed.

Curlies are quite an interesting breed. I've always wondered what the market was like for them. I've seen a couple in the english ring over the last few years.

Fun stuff!

Our first Friesian foal was a few days shy of four months old when we got her. Her mother was in really bad shape and it was pretty certain that she would die if they didn't get that foal off her. I bought some milk replacer pellets for the little baby thinking it was just too soon to be off her milk but she wouldn't even touch the stuff after about a week.

I generally wean at 6 months. I feed a mare and foal feed after the baby is born. The foal will generally eat his mothers feed from day one. When they get a little older, we generally make a creep feeder so the foal can eat on his/her own without the mamma or other horses. We always feed hay. Either free choice or twice a day.

I have AQHA... I don't know much about the larger breeds such as Friesian or Percheron.

Look at my BYC page under Hooves and you will see some of my babies.

I let my Mares/foals wean themselves and then they go and live in the pasture with their Uncle.
They eat everything their Dams eat from almost day one. When they are separated they eat pasture, good timothy/grass mix and a organic vitamin/mineral mix.
We have raised many foals and they always have turned out healthy, happy and their feet are so rock hard they never need shoes.

You should have a very beautiful foal. Our Friesian cross(Laes, RIP

) is strikingly beautiful and her personality is a tribute to both of her parents.

PS I think $7500 is a deal!

I had a girlfriend who did that .. we were riding one day, me on her mare, she on the 3-year old filly. About halfway through the ride, the filly had to stop for a "ninny-break" ... while being ridden.

I was sooo thankful we were out in the middle of nowhere ..

**HOW EMBARRASSING**

hehe

IT IS A DEAL! can you believe it? Out of Anne 340 and a full papered STER mare- unbroken lines!

I called to get insurance quotes and everyone I talked to had a conversation like this:

them: "breed?"
me: "friesian, out of Anne."
them: "beautiful breed. Nice."
me: "thanks"
them: "purchase price?"
me "7500."
them: "USD?! MAN! thats an awesome deal... Who's the breeder? Do they have others?"

lolololol.

I'll tell you what, when God sets something up, he does it well. Iam perfectly happy with it. lol.
