ALABAMA!!

D
glad you are feeling well! I don't know how far from you hueytown is, but my mother in law just got some pretty EE hens from an old farmer out there. She said he had lots!

Do you happen to have his contact info? I am SEARCHING for some laying hens. I only have 1! :(

Anyone else know odd anyone who may have any breed of good laying hens. I need some eggs! When you have three teens, you wipe out a dozen every time you cook bfast! I live in Talladega county but would drive up to an hour.

Thank you chirpingcricket! Later on this summer I may try to go to a couple of auctions and see what they have either in Millbrook or in Clanton. If I can sell my EE roos then my DH would let me get some hen's if I can find any pretty one's. I did want to keep a couple of my EE roos. Two of them at least will be black and white so if I can find a few pretty hens I will be happy! I am going to keep my brown EE hens! lol I do love them already! I am just amazed they change so much and no way of knowing what they will turn out to be?

Hey Chicka, If any way possible, you head this way, I'll be glad to meet you on the coast lady. If any one of our girls meet your fancy, I'll donate one on behalf of EE lovers!

As a nurse and keeper of my original flock for 2 1/2 years +, they will be healthy or they won't leave. This is a first with me for Cocci. From what I've been told around here at feed stores, etc. A lot of folks are dealing with this due to the weather.
From what I've learned re: hatching, make the Easter hatch your biggee. . .by Mother's Day, at least along the coast, the weather rules! Take care!

Chirpingcricket, Quail are Yummy!

Especially the bobwhites. They also have a very soothing call and have called a wild covey into my yard where I never had quail before.
The eggs are very small and somewhat hard to peel. They are almost impossible to crack to use raw. I have boiled them and made quail stuffed eggs. I may try pickled quail eggs this year.
OK. This must be kept secret between you, me and Razadia!!

Sounds good, love just about anything pickeled myself!

DH has gout, so our diet is limited to chicken, turkey and seafood/salt and fresh water fish. Cooked as prescribed. Can manage raising, catching or purchasing everything local, shrimp, etc. except just don't want to raise turkeys on our little spot of land.

I wonder if quail is considered high in purines like deer (love, love), beef or pork? Always looking for something to cook for supper other than chicken or turkey! Although every now and again I will cook a steak and eat before he gets home so I don't tempt him!

I may just start secretly looking around on how to house them, cost to build yet another pen, feed, care, cost to feed, etc.! Shhhhhhh. . .

Although, this might make me feel peculiar when I start hearing the bobwhites start calling from the edges of our woods. . .knowing I've got their relatives penned, and waiting for. . .

New member here from Mobile...proud owner of 5 RIR, 1 Buff orpington, 3 barred rocks, 2 ameracaunas, 1 delaware, 1 silkie, 1 black jersey giant, 1 blue jersey giant, 1 blue orpington, 1 australorp. All are chicks except the barred rocks, buff orpington, and 2 RIR. I have been trolling around the site for about a year and finally decided i needed to join. Looking forward to the giving and receiving of advice.

P.S. no medical problems with the chickens but i was interested in good preventative maintenance medication for the girls as well as where to get it.
Thanks, Trey
Welcome, from across the bay! 6 miles from Fairhope pier, Baldwin County. 30 minutes from Mobile, via 181 Malbis and interstate.
Sounds like you have a flock of Rock Stars!! Congrats. Stick around, and you will most likely find answers to all your questions.
1. What part of Mobile, to give you an idea of feed stores, supplies, etc.
2. How old are your birds? Re: prevent maintenance and medication protocols.
I'll be visiting with my Mom in Mobile tomorrow, Wednesday. I'll check back with you in the pm to see what you've heard from others.
Glad you are here, talk to you soon!

Well, the guy that was coming from Mobile couldn't make it. His GPS was acting up and he ended up in Marbry. That means he passed us twice.

If no one buys them he wants to meet us at a halfway point and offered to pay for gas and pay extra for the hens. I went out to the coop this afternoon to see if anymore chicks had hatched. The eggs that were there yesterday were nowhere to be seen today. On top of that, before we caught the hens this morning, I went out to make sure momma hen was still on the nest. I saw something black laying on the floor of the coop and went in to see what it was. It was a nearly dead RIR/BA chick that had been ripped out of its shell. I didn't expect it to live, but it's doing very well for something that could hardly breath when I found it. The only thing that saved it from bleeding out was the dirt caked to its belly.
Goodness on the Mobile saga. Sure hope he comes through for you.
Oh no, on the eggs, what could be going on? Snake? Rat? It would leave egg shell, I would think, also, same if hen/roo were eating the eggs, wouldn't you think? Poor little one, thank goodness for small miracles! Nature's bandaid hard at work making a scab! The other thing that saved that chickie was you, and grace, showing up in time to find it and intervene!!

What did you do? Incubator to dry/fluff gain strength? How is it holding up?

Fiance is from that area. It's nowhere near Clanton/Millbrook.

Guess I may have to get me some EE :p
EE's are a mystery! Makes it fun, just when you think you have an idea of color pattern, sex or egg color, poof, abra ca dabra, Surprise!!!

Sweet, spoil easy, head and shoulder adornment, wrist and arm attachments, love to ride on your back if your working on the ground or bending over. Ankle bracelets. Toe, foot rings. Errr. Did I leave anything out? Love to eat.

SPOILT, especially if you hand raise them or take them early from hens.
