Sorry for your losses.

Most owls in Alaska are protected, you can contact local Fish and Game, they may be able to live trap and move the owl for you. I have covered 90% of the runs with Tarps so the bird predators can't get into them. I have Eagles, Owls and hawks here.

Hatching News:
2 Pure LF Light Brahma
3 LF Light Brahma x Barred Rock

2 Pips (no Change yet)
1 doing nothing......(that I can see from the window)

Temp 100 F (still air Hatcher)
Humidity 60-65%

ETA:
1 more LF Light Brahma x Barred Rock hatched,
the other LF Light Brahma x Barred Rock hatched was shrinkwrapped and I helped remove just the top of the shell, it is resting with a warm damp small rag over it. we will see if it can finish hatching on it's own......

Holy cow Tori!
You do need a break!
Off topic here; will you have turkeys this winter?

When you say "turkeys", do you mean on the hoof, or in the freezer? Both, hopefully, but more likely the latter.

You CAN, but it would fall under SSS.

We have firecrackers that we throw out that sound like gunshots to scare them off. Covered runs are the only way to go...

... I'm so sorry...

it's HIGHLY illegal to shoot owls here. I have geese in a pen and for the owl/eagle reason I have flagging tape tied around the top, not only does it make it too small for them to get in, it flaps around and scared an potentials when it's windy... and it's always windy here.

Alaska animal lover, VERY sorry for your loss, but don't shoot the owl, they should be fairly easy to deter with some ingenuity

I hate the SSS crap for this sort of thing... I won't get into it as it WILL cause an argument, but remember, you're breaking the law when you do it.

So out of the 8 eggs I was pretty sure were good,
we have
2 Pure LF Light Brahmas
5 LF Light Brahma x Barred Rock
1 looks like it quit..... (didn't open the egg yet, I will open for conformation later today or tomorrow)

there were 10 that went into lockdown, but I believe 2 quit much earlier ( I will open for conformation later today or tomorrow).

Mrs. here... That's what the "wink" smiley was for after the comment about SSS. I was being sarcastic.

. I'm sure there are plenty of predators that "disappear" that we never hear about. Down here F&G isn't too helpful in that department, so we keep everyone covered and keep the firecrackers on hand. I don't mind the owls because the keep the rodent population down, but I warn perple that ask about free-ranging that they had better be prepared to lose a few birds. Not that this is Aimee's situation, of course.

Thanks everyone. I won't kill the owl, as much as I want to. It's just being an owl.
I'll be working on covering my run asap.
I know it will keep coming back. Why all my BCMs?

Tori, I'm asking about the turkeys because I'd like to get some hatching eggs from you if you think your BR will be laying. I wouldn't need them until Feb or so, but I didn't know if you were going to keep any of yours over the winter. Or if they layed in winter at all.

I'm homeschooling for sure this year and thought we could work on a project of some sort while we incubate them. The history of the turkey, or why we eat turkey on Thanksgiving, something like that. A little American history lesson.

I'm sure the look on my face when I was expecting a dog or cat to be in there and it was an owl was pretty funny. She/he wasn't too impressed with me either.
My luck if I tried to shoot it I'd hit one of my goats or something, I'm no rifleman, lol.
I'll be locking the pop door and making sure everyone is tucked in safe until I get my run covered that's for sure.
