Alert: deadly unmarked bulbs

The part of this tragedy where each member of the flock died next to their best buddy is what makes my heart grieve. That chickens are capable of love and affection, not only for each other, but for us humans, is what makes this a tragedy.

The part about this product not being labeled properly, as if doing so would discourage people from buying it, depriving the company of revenue, is what has me so screaming angry!

This is exactly what needs to happen when we buy a product that is harmful - shout about it to everyone we know! Thank you for doing this in spite of your grief. You've probably helped save hundreds of chickens and prevented untold grief.

Heartbreaking story. You did the right thing by posting. Thanks!! I couldn't imagine seeing all your chickens for the last time in that fashion. Glad, you have more chickens & your not giving up. Good for you !!! I've never heard of this bulb. Seems like they should mark the box's. I'm not a sue happy type person but this sounds like a law suit to me. I mean how were you to know ?

Thank you for you comfort and caring.

My husband and I are reeling from this. We researched the cause for days with the veterinary community. We are amazed at the lack of straight forward warnings and education. Our feed stores, veterinarians, and friends did not have this information.

What is amazing is that it is not just this one example of bulb - it is most shatterproof bulbs and most are unmarked! We found only one bulb distributor on the net that posted a warning on a warming light. Any coating would be suspect. In our web search using the words "sudden death" only well known avian disease information came up. But if you type PTFE you get numerous articles and warnings. Of course, this is hindsight, at the time of this disaster we didn't suspect the bulb.

I wish every box of live chicks arrived with an article similar to the onefrom McMurray Hatchery which has been graciously passed on in this thread. Again, thanks for the comfort each of you has extended.

have you emailed the company to let them know what their lack of info has caused? I'd like to hear what they say!!!!! i know the devastation of finding your flock dead in the morning, truly devastating.... The way to feel better is to start rebuilding your flock........

I am so very sorry for your loss, and RIP to your beautiful chickens

how heartbreaking. i have the expectation that things might go wrong via disease or injury. or that a predator will take them, but to find they died as a result of my care would be hard to take.
i am buying a new heat bulb today because the one i have been using was used to begin with and i have been afraid it would go out during the night.
i would have only looked at the wattage & such. i am grateful for this information.
glad you have survivors.

this is so so sad, i am very sorry for your loss. i just bought a pack of bulbs from tsc and now im buggin out, i have to read up on them. also, i know it might be to soon, but at least on the bright side, nothing cures sadness like little baby chicks.

Thank you for sharing this. It's just awful and unfair that the bulbs are not not marked as containing teflon and hopefully now that folks are alerted to the danger , we can be more vigilant in protecting our animals.
