Always hear about predator problems. why not me? (PICS)

The white dog was a GP/lab mix and the brown is Lab/BC mix...and one of the biggest sweeties on the planet. He does look like a meanie with that BC intensity. He is very lethal on coon, groundhog, moles, mice, rats, and stray dogs~will absolutely wag a person to death!

The real protector of all things in the yard was the white one, Lucy. She is one of the greatest LGDs a person could have had. Sadly, I had to put her down last week due to pain issues from old age.

I don't know how Jake, the brown one, will do without her guidance but it will be interesting to see. I am also training up two Newfie cross pups right now to replace Lucy....it will take two dogs to replace that one wonderful dog.

I've seen these two dogs nearly take a stray apart....the white one started on the front and the brown on the back and tried real hard to meet in the middle. I had to pull them off it before they killed it. He hasn't been back but he left some blood and fur behind.

sorry about 'little' lucy.

does BC = border collie?

i am not savvy on lgds. i didn't even know a real lgd could be a mix. in fact i didn;t even think a lab could have any part in an lgd........

you dont have to tire yourself by answering the latter stuff!

good luck with your newbie newfies.

hoping to meet you in the great tomorrow--if i make it.....

I had a very tight pen with chicks locked in it, a weasel somehow got in there and killed them all. I would have sworn that there was no way anything could get in. You have just been lucky, but keep up the routine, sounds like a good one. Love your set up.

I think teach1rusl hit on a possible explanation in that the surrounding ecosystem where you are located is functioning well enough that the chickens aren't a major temptation. Predator-prey dynamics in suburban neighborhoods and heavily farmed rural areas function differently, for instance they have an overabundance of mid-sized predators such as coons and coyotes.

I don't know if one can call my mix dogs true LGD breeds...but in my book, if they guard my livestock and they are dogs, they qualify!

Would my dogs live out in a pasture with the sheep? Nope. They only guard my livestock because they guard their territory...and I place my livestock smack dab in their territory. If we lived on a farm, their territory would probably encompass the pasture area and, thus, they would guard that also.

I tend to like dual purpose animals and items. I love diversity and usefulness, so I try to only keep animals that are both.

Thank you, and hope all goes well!

No pictures but my property is fully fenced with one string of electric on the top and two strings of electric on the length that follows the creek. Thats the wilderness side, the creek side. We also have a pond and fields.

Huge Cedar, Maple and Firs trees dot the property in groups. Coops are under a huge Maple tree.
Chickens are free range. Dogs are always free to roam the yard.
Most attacks have occured when the humans have not been home and it has been raining or when we have gone in the house, any weather.

I think the attacks have happened when we are not home, and it has been raining, because the dogs will sleep on the porch when it is raining. When it is nicer weather they sleep in the driveway, waiting for us to come home and it is usually right near the coops. In the thick of chicken action.

Just had to come on here and say to Blackbart....got a pretty good chuckle when I scrolled down and saw your thumbnail picture. Pretty cute! What is that?
