Am I the only on who gets picked on for likeing chickens to much?

This exact conversation has happened to me on several occasions. After the second instance I decided it showed more of a "state of ignorance" on their part than insanity on mine.

Do I get picked on? YES, BUT I JUST DON'T CARE AND I'M NOT ABOUT TO CHANGE FOR ANYONE!

i feel the same way chickaddict they dont know what they are missing. People who refer to chickens as filthy animals obviously hasnt been around my chickens and 99.9 % of all byc'ers chickens because they are clean healthy and happy. When i tell people that my chickens arent nearly as dirty and smelly as my cats litter box they still dont believe me. But it is true my chickens dont stink a bit but every time you pass that litter box

Haha i am glad i am not the only one with this problem...

I don't exactly get picked on, but one little fiend in my class is quite obnoxious. He runs into me in the hallway and says, "Oh, excuse me chicken whisperer!" Or he would "whisper" to his friends, "She's crazy, she's the chicken whisperer!" I gave him a peice of my mind the other day, and I got in trouble for it.

I just ignore him, though. I don't strive to impress him.

This morning, my son accused me of "going a little overboard" because I have a flock of 7 plus 3 eggs in the bator (those will most likely be rehomed... just checking to see if we can hatch) plus we're getting a beautiful minorca hen at the end of the month which will give us a total of 8 in our flock.

I guess it does seem a little excessive in light of the fact that we already had a dog and two cats and recently acquired a temporary 3rd cat. Our house is tiny & we are somewhat overrun with animals here.

My son asked me how come all of a sudden I want to keep chickens and grow my own food and howcome "all that environmental crap" is "all of a sudden so important" to me. I told him these are things I always wanted to do, that the things that concern me now are things that have always concerned me, but as a single mother raising two children all alone and working 2 jobs for most of their formative years and living in apartments, farming/gardening wasn't in the cards. I spent many years frustrated, having the occasional patio tomato or even small flower bed gardens from time to time. We had our first REAL big garden in the spring of 2005 when I was 43 years old!

I applaud and admire those of you who start chickeneering and gardening early in life and raise your children that way. I wish I could have done that.

No you are not. I am picked on called bonkers for how much time I spend with them and my goats. But I am learning. I think they are jealous cause they are not getting their own eggs.
