Am I the only one who threatens hens/pullets with freezer camp?

I don’t put my girls in freezer camp. But...I do corner them all dramatic like scold them and tap them on their beaks with my finger. A little embarrassement and attitude adjustment. My leghorn can actually make me feel guilty!

So have they just recently quit for the winter? I wouldn't butcher mine for that either. They do need a break after all..

The hens are either molting or (in the case of one) have just given up with the lack of sunlight. The pullets aren't quite old enough yet. So we're in that awkward stretch where you know there will soon be a lot of eggs, but absolutely nothing right now.

Last year I started stockpiling eggs but this year we've been giving all the extras to family, so there's no stockpile at all. So I had to buy eggs from the farmer's market last week and when they asked if I wanted to be notified of winter sales, I had to shamefully admit I have 7 chickens but 0 eggs.

Ugh.. i know exactly how that goes.. i didnt stockpile this year either.. and out of roughly 20 that are old enough to lay Im getting 1 to 5 eggs a day.. the rest wont lay till spring most likely so I'll be buying eggs too before long..
