Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hi I have a question and hope you can help! We have an americauna hen who just started laying about a week ago but has only laid maybe 4 eggs. I know they are hers because everyone else has been laying for months and her eggs are very long...well the first 2 eggs were white then yesterday she laid a light brown egg and then today it was GREEN!

Is it normal for them to not lay colored eggs right away?

I was totally shocked and just convinced she was not going to lay colorful eggs.

Thanks!
I have NEVER heard of this. It is usual for an Ameraucana to lay a somewhat greener egg when she starts laying and for the depth of Blue to lighten somewhat as her laying season progresses. BUT from white to brown to green ......

Thanks for the reply...yeah I am confused too. I suppose it could be a different chicken BUT I have seen them all laying for months and we are suddenly getting an additional egg that is always long a skinny

You have a chicken fooling you. 99.9% of the chickens in the world never ever change their egg color, neverless twice! The shade will change, but not the overall color.

Hi all,

I have a friend who will be sending me Lavendar Ameracauna eggs to hatch, once they are hatched what should I look at for quality? I know she is hatching her's from a breeder, I have seen the pictures of the breeder's and they are gorgeous!

I see that your question has not been answered. I don't have Lavenders but there is a thread just for them, maybe somebody on that thread can help you. You can also go to the ABC breeders website and peruse the threads on there. Its also good to join! From what I read on here, some of the issues are poor feather quality, gold leakage, and ??? Can someone please help...... Of course I will also add that these are the issues after, you eliminate general faults/DQs, and breed faults/DQs.

What are some interesting color projects that people have been working on for Ameraucanas?

There is so many! Lavender, Chocolate, Silver Laced, Barred, Red Pyle, Black Gold, Mottled, and ???????????? There is also work that needs done on existing accepted varieties. Lacing on the Blues, removing Barring from Whites, Silver and Brown Red seem to be extinct??? Anyone else can add some 2 cents please..................

You need to apply science to confirm your hypothosis by trap nesting your birds to see who actually is laying what colored eggs. Nothing is impossible but this is highly improbable. Keep documentation and good luck with your project.

There has been a lot of information posted on the Ameraucana Club Forum and does not seem necessary to continue posting it here every other week because these questions continue to be asked here over and over again. Just surf there and your answers would or should be answered unfortunately if you are not a member you can not participate. Good luck and enjoy the informative articles.

A few drops of food coloring (6-8) in the vent of the bird in question will soon let you know which is her egg. I don't have trap nests, but with colored leg bands and a box of 4 food colors, I soon know who is laying what. If I have more than 4 hens, there needs to be a washout period between the first and second group to test.

It will leave a few streaks of color. Don't expect the whole egg to be colored and you may need to repeat the dye the next day to get reliable marking.
