Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hi, all!

I'm considering adding some Ameraucanas (not EE's) to my flock in the spring, and I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about their temperament. I haven't really heard much about their disposition, so I thought this would be the place to ask the question.

If anyone could offer their opinion on this, I would be much obliged. Thank you!

Hi I have a question and hope you can help! We have an americauna hen who just started laying about a week ago but has only laid maybe 4 eggs. I know they are hers because everyone else has been laying for months and her eggs are very long...well the first 2 eggs were white then yesterday she laid a light brown egg and then today it was GREEN!

Is it normal for them to not lay colored eggs right away?

I was totally shocked and just convinced she was not going to lay colorful eggs.

Thanks!

A single hen laid all these eggs in the course of a week. She is an olive egger (wheaten ameraucana x wheaten maran). Not the same as your case as here only the amount of brown pigment changes over the course of the week:

I was thinking my brown egg layers egg color changes often, but my blue eggs don't change. So a white egg would not become blue.... different genes working.... I can see a blue egg turning green but that is it.
I can see where egg color could possibly change on a bird that is half marans because of the intense deposits of color put on by the genetics. It seems the eggs that take longer to develop in these breeds get the most color. But on a run of the mill easter egger or ameraucana, the egg color should not change.

Is he a splash, there is something not right with his color, and he has a lot of gold in him. Your boys on your website look like they have huge combs. Are you sure they are pure? The pictures are not the right angle to judge type, but I am thinking he is lacking in that department as well.

I am sorry if I might come across harsh, these are not breed to standard. IMO I know that sometimes you have to work with what you got, can afford, etc. So I am not trying to discourage, just help. Any animal I breed I cull very hard and ruthlessly. I want to do right by the breed, I don't want to make a bunch of sub-par animals.
Here is one of our up and coming Blue Ameraucana Cockrels......what is everyones opinion on him?

he is Blue alright. not splash. and he is showing some gold leakage which is normal for some blue lines. he may be a good sire for show birds if mated to black birds.

you would think this boy is splash right? but he is infact blue, but on the light side.

Blue(Bl/b+) is not only a incompletely dominant gene, it has a incomplete penetrance effect on birds, meaning the shade will very from bird to bird and will also be affected by other genes too.

Heather,
Are you going to the PA Farm show this week starting 5 to 12 January? I know Larry is always there and Will would probably be there with that killer buff cock he had been showing.

Clare,
I will not be showing there because they leave their birds there for a week and anything I would show will not return live to my operations. They also require LT vaccination and I do not vaccinate for that. I probably won't show any lavenders this year because I am rebuilding after two years of preditors killing the best birds I had unless I have a good year and show in the coming fall. I know everyone is in a hurry to get them APA approved but most members would like them to be called Lavenders and not self blues. Unless everyone is willing to compromise and use the description as Self Blue it may be a while yet. I am for Lavender as the description and will be entered as such when I do.
