Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Heather,
I guess I will miss you because I go during the week when there are less people walking and shoving and want to see the birds.  I know Larry always has a problem with that show for some reason.  It must be the vaccine they are using like Jean says.  I prefer not to use it if at ll possible.  I know I had it back in the early 1970's when I bought some True Araucanas and Lakenvelders.   All the lakevenders had it or were carriers.  Once I killed them, Lakenvelders, there were not more signs of the disease.  The Araucanas and EE's did not seem to be affected by it.

Harry I have decided to go during the week also. Maybe even on Friday to avoid the crowds!

Hi, I didn't see anyone answer your question. I can only speak to my birds which are the WBS variety and I've maintained a closed flock. So with that being said, my Ameraucanas are pretty friendly. No aggressiveness whatsoever among the males or females. I routinely house several males together.

In fact, they may be overly friendly at times. Just wait until you have a 3 or 4 month old pullet fly up out of nowhere and land on your shoulder! You may be wishing you could get those 10 years of your life back and decide you'd like a less friendly bird!

God Bless,

Wonderful! It sounds like these will be great birds after all. I can't wait to add some of them to my flock!

I guess I'll have to remember to watch my shoulder when in the coop.

Thank you so much for your help! Much obliged.

I am trying to locate someone who will sell me some pure Araucana eggs or chicks that are not from a hatchery. I'd like one roo and three hens for my flock, or will take 6 eggs or straight run... I live in Hillsboro, Oregon. Anyone?

If it is really Araucanas you are after, you might want to check out an Araucana thread ...

If it is Ameraucanas you are after, you might want to check out the Ameraucana Breeders Club, breeders page ....

I am for whatever gets them recognized fastest. They can call them purple people eaters for all I care. I like to exhibit my birds and It is sort of pointless as a unrecognized variety. I can use the pen space for a second line of Blacks.
