Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Clare,
I will not be showing there because they leave their birds there for a week and anything I would show will not return live to my operations. They also require LT vaccination and I do not vaccinate for that. I probably won't show any lavenders this year because I am rebuilding after two years of preditors killing the best birds I had unless I have a good year and show in the coming fall. I know everyone is in a hurry to get them APA approved but most members would like them to be called Lavenders and not self blues. Unless everyone is willing to compromise and use the description as Self Blue it may be a while yet. I am for Lavender as the description and will be entered as such when I do.
I am for whatever gets them recognized fastest. They can call them purple people eaters for all I care. I like to exhibit my birds and It is sort of pointless as a unrecognized variety. I can use the pen space for a second line of Blacks.

Heather,
Are you going to the PA Farm show this week starting 5 to 12 January? I know Larry is always there and Will would probably be there with that killer buff cock he had been showing.

Harry

I am not going to show any birds at the farm show. I have issues keeping them inside for a week in January, Larry has lost a lot of birds. Last year laryno........... pardon I don't know how to spell it took out almost his whole flock. I live very close and will be going to the show on Sunday. Larry also said he is not showing AMs this year at the farm show. Will has a gorgeous buff cock, and he has some awesome black pullets out of General Lee, his old-timer black cock. We have found a magic cross. General Lee daughers, crossed with my old blue cock (he is from Paul Smith) We are loving the results! General Lee and Emmit are getting older, I hope we can find replacements that are just as great! Are you coming down?

I am in complete agreement. Any bird that I would take, would not come back...................I don't give my birds any vaccines at this time, so to vaccinate them for the Laryno..............I don't think so. Then you got to trust that everybody gave the vaccine at the appropriate time, or you will have birds shedding the live virus! No thank you. Whenever I get home from the farm show, clothes are in the wash, I will take a shower, and the shoes will be bleached as well as my mates in my car.

The lavenders aren't getting recognized at this time because very few are showing them and we do not have the five breeders for five years yet; not because of the issues of the name. We will deal with that when the time comes.

And regarding ILT vaccine, the Schering Plough LT-IVAX is not a live virus and does not shed bird to bird. There are alot of poultry sites that are selling other brands that are live and they should not be used!

Heather,
I guess I will miss you because I go during the week when there are less people walking and shoving and want to see the birds. I know Larry always has a problem with that show for some reason. It must be the vaccine they are using like Jean says. I prefer not to use it if at ll possible. I know I had it back in the early 1970's when I bought some True Araucanas and Lakenvelders. All the lakevenders had it or were carriers. Once I killed them, Lakenvelders, there were not more signs of the disease. The Araucanas and EE's did not seem to be affected by it.

Jean,
I hope to show a few Lavenders this coming fall if things work out. Right now I can not spare or take the chance to show the few I have left form two bad years of preditors.

Is he a splash, there is something not right with his color, and he has a lot of gold in him. Your boys on your website look like they have huge combs. Are you sure they are pure? The pictures are not the right angle to judge type, but I am thinking he is lacking in that department as well.

I am sorry if I might come across harsh, these are not breed to standard. IMO I know that sometimes you have to work with what you got, can afford, etc. So I am not trying to discourage, just help. Any animal I breed I cull very hard and ruthlessly. I want to do right by the breed, I don't want to make a bunch of sub-par animals.
He is a blue with no gold, red mud yes as it has rained here nearly every other day for past week and half. I do appreciate your input but i've shown this boy at several APA sanctioned shows and took best of breed at every one of them. I hope to one day have the best that is my goal, just as yours.

Sometimes birds that come from Ameraucana stock (and every other breed, for that matter) disappoint us and don't quite measure up. She does not fit the official description of "Ameraucana" if she lays a cream coloured egg unfortunately.

Sorry for the delayed response. Holiday period was rush rush and then my computer has been down the last several days. Took a while to get my computer tech over here but thankfully he found it was only my monitor that died and not my computer. He did say I've got some transistors or something on my motherboard that are bulding and it could go anytime though.

I've still got about 7 pages to go thru but I must address this issue once again it appears. We covered this subject ad nauseum a couple of months ago. It is sad to see this false information is still being promulgated as it is simply NOT true. So for those who wish to see the whole very detailed information and description as to why, you can search this thread back and find the info. Bottom line: it's just not true and I proved it beyond any reasonable doubt before.

God Bless,

I have NEVER heard of this. It is usual for an Ameraucana to lay a somewhat greener egg when she starts laying and for the depth of Blue to lighten somewhat as her laying season progresses. BUT from white to brown to green ......

My guess is this bird would be an EE. I had never heard of an egg changing color either but I sold an EE to a neighbor and she swears that it will lay both brown and green eggs.

God Bless,

Hi, all!

I'm considering adding some Ameraucanas (not EE's) to my flock in the spring, and I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about their temperament. I haven't really heard much about their disposition, so I thought this would be the place to ask the question.

If anyone could offer their opinion on this, I would be much obliged. Thank you!

Hi, I didn't see anyone answer your question. I can only speak to my birds which are the WBS variety and I've maintained a closed flock. So with that being said, my Ameraucanas are pretty friendly. No aggressiveness whatsoever among the males or females. I routinely house several males together.

In fact, they may be overly friendly at times. Just wait until you have a 3 or 4 month old pullet fly up out of nowhere and land on your shoulder! You may be wishing you could get those 10 years of your life back and decide you'd like a less friendly bird!

God Bless,
