. I thought the chick on the left was a brown leghorn but she's beginning to look just like my Ameraucana. Thoughts?

If you got them from a hatchery or feed store, I'd guess they're Easter Eggers... the one on the right definitely has green legs so not a pure Am, sorry... the left one might be beardless, hard to see from that shot, but that happens a lot from feed store/hatchery ones... cute chicks... :)

Hmmm, him? her?
Preference for a generic gender for a chick like cats of unknown gender are she and dogs are he?
First impression, really early guess?
;)

I was going with what dstokely said, lol... but I always call mine boys til they prove me wrong... that way any girls is a pleasant sueprise... :D

Actually, I had he first, but then since I really want hens, I decided to change it to her.  I have hens until reality hits and they start to crow.:yiipchick

:gig

I do the opposite... ;)

I now have three!  Either a dark blue or black.  Can you tell I am excited about my new babies....and my new incubator!

Awesome!! Go chickies!!

Glad you have a better bator now! :thumbsup

Thanks! Just built it a couple weeks ago. I'll add one more after we move to give them more space as they grow. Right now there are 10 in the bottom and 18 up top just a couple weeks younger.

Ill keep an eye out for the signs. There are 2 or 3 that im pretty sure of.

I just told my wife I wanted to build a brooder cabinet like that. I LOVE IT !!!

Last photo I took of Gypsy, who is will be 9 (yep, nine) years old in November and is currently laying. Half of her lineage is Cree Farms, who I believe after many years dropped out of breeding Ameraucanas to do some other livestock. They had beautiful stock, though.

Snow is in this photo below just a few months younger than Gypsy. She has severe arthritis on her left hock so cannot walk well without using her wings, but she's still kicking, though like a little white haired lady with a cane. She is full Cree Farms. The barred hen behind her is Panda, 1/2 Barred Rock and 1/2 Blue Ameraucana, same age as Snow, 8 years old. I think that's Gypsy at the nest box, too. Actually, Panda and Gypsy had the same blue Ameraucana mother so they're half sisters.

They are so sweet! You can tell they have been well cared for and had a good long life! Thank you for posting them!

I joined after all of that, and really don't care to know what happened. Obviously I'm fond of Susan, and I love having John be a part of this forum and offering his insight and advice as well. As with any forum, all posts should be taken with a grain of salt and try not to get your feathers ruffled.
For anyone that enjoys ruffled feathers, I know just the thread

And she said??????

That is a very impressive brooder setup.

Well, I've been gone all day, but coming back I see my post from last night offended some, and for that I apologize. It was not meant as a political statement, I think I stated more than once what both breeders have contributed to the breed. I do get my feathers ruffled when someone makes broad categorizations ( all pit bulls are dangerous, all members of a political party, or religious belief, or gender are "fill in the blank").

One day, maybe when I'm 70 or so (I'm 63 now, so not so far in the future ;) ), I'll learn to take my hands away from the keyboard and stay off the soapbox --- especially when I'm particularly tired.

OH MY GOODNESS OH MY GOODNESS OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I'M FINALLY GETTING SOME REAL AMERAUCANAS!!!! I'm so excited!!! I found a guy only about 20 minutes away who has (according to him) Paul Smith breeding stock, and he's got about 30-40 chickies for me to choose from, which I will be doing on Tuesday. I'm sooooo freakin happy!!! Finally my sweet little EE roo, Monty, will have more girlfriends to hang out with. He's been alone ever since last month when his other girlfriends all perished in a vicious coon massacre. Poor baby....but now he's gonna have some classy, fancy NEW girlfriends, lol. He told me he was happy :D

"Monty, you're getting new girlfriends...."

"SAY WHAAAAAAAT?!" lol

Awesome! I used 1x4 8' furring strips for less than $2 ea at home depot. Left over exterior paint, cheapest hardware, and the 1/2" hardware cloth is much cheaper at murdochs than the depot. All together was just around $100 and i jave enough materials to build one more, a lid for the top and maybe even a half sized one for traveling.

Well worth it. Just be careful, I took one brad nail to the thumb, better then losing it I suppose. :/
