Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Before I read your post I was going to say that ameraucana has a gypsy face and she must be crossed with a sumatra.....

pips&peeps :

Keep them both; always have a back up in case something happens. And from my experience the slower maturing roos always turn out the best in the long run.

Interesting! Does not selecting the slower maturing roo, slow down the overall maturity rate of the flock? This year I am wanting to only winter one Ameraucana Roo ... So I have to pick one.

Thanks

She is a bit of a gypsy. She was also very determined to brood these babies and has fought off a herd of fiesty silkies that keep trying to steal her babies from her. I wasn't so sure she would be a good mama, but clearly she is doing a fine job of it.

That one was a random chick from the bantam pen at TSC. She has been an awesome chicken. If I ever get new pens built I'll add a sumatra line. They are so pretty! I'd love to cross sumatras with my ameraucanas to make a stunning line of EEs. Wouldn't that be fun? Especially the roosters with that tail. WOW!

Jean- these babies have a daddy from the Gardner line, but the hens are all from the chicks I hatched from you. I have been very, very pleased with those girls.

Would anybody care to post pics of the "perfect" pea comb? Pictures speak louder than words. I have 10 black cockerels, and need to start figuring out who's staying and who's going. Thanks, dak

sorry it is a bit blurry, but you can basically see the balance and the way it contours

Thanks cottagegarden. Any close-ups anyone? Possibly from the top?

Also, I read on another thread that it is sometimes possible to determine which birds carry the single comb gene by them having a not quite right pea comb. I have a lav and a lav split cockerel whose middle row is prominant and thick, and their outside row not being complete. Would this assumption, be correct in most cases. I would hate to cull the lav, as he is a BIG boy, at least as big as the blacks he was hatched with if not bigger.

He is a good boy and rules the roost over all other cockerels. (He is natures choice too.) Its just his crow...High pitched and hollow sounding.. Sounds like an owl:rolleyes:
He is the logical choice.. Those blacks with that green sheen are just such eye candy.. Really hard for me to cull two I did. Still need to cull 4 more..

Beautiful well mannered birds..
Thanks

JK! He's gorgeous and a lot of folks would love a roo that sounds more like an Owl.

Thanks! He and Hamlet are good boys. They are good looking and have really mellow personalities. I do love a good-natured rooster. Both boys are throwing nice babies that seem to have that sweet temper. I'm so pleased with them both.

The black one looks like my boy. He has won reserve of show a couple of times....

Your boy has a better comb than mine.
