Just had a Lav Ameraucana chick hatch!

after disposing 26 infertile (confirmed while disposing) silver eggs thought for sure my cock was infertile. had 5 that went into lockdown (just hoping that they were not fertile by black roo still) with some black and some blue eggs. woke up this morning to see 4 definite silver chicks

and 1 blue W.M. chick

just had to tell someone. now i got to leave the house for the day so i can let the hatch continue. any thoughts on why so low fertility on silvers??? they were in separate breeding pens for 3 weeks before eggs were gathered. it surely wouldn't of took the roo that long to figure it out. or would it be safe to say he just has a low sperm count??? any way 4 silver chicks for now

I had the same problem in my wheaten pen this spring. My OE/EE eggs were all good, but maybe one in 10 of the wheatens were- and I have several wheaten hens that were laying the clear eggs. Seen as how I had some fertility- I am marking it up to too many girls to cover while being free-ranged.

This year I'm working on Black and Blue Gold, Blue Laced Red, Lavender, and Cuckoo. Not sure if cuckoo can have slate legs...

Jean, how long do you use a roo before you retire him? Geoffry will be three years old in a couple of months.
