Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hello! I was hoping you all could help me? I have a rooster that i just got 2 or 3 months ago ( I have him and two hens that i got at the same time. They are about 4 1/2 months old now). And i have been having some trouble with him, he is really scared of me ( i think his first owner was mean to him) the two hens are also not that friendly but he is much worse and i don't know why. I haven't had much time to play with them but they get handled at least once a day and every time i go to get him he tries to go through the fence to get away from me and when i do pick him up he screams very loud, has a melt down, and goes into his own world. Is there anything wrong with him? and Is there anything i can do to help? I'm still new to keeping chickens i have only had chickens for 8 months. What should i do?
I would just leave him alone. You don't want to handle and baby your roosters. They will lose respect for you get mean, and challenge you. He will get over being so skiddish if you leave him alone. Just be really nice to the hens, offer them a favorite snack. He will learn to be around you, and relax. Only handle him when you need to check something out on him, or do health stuff. You can still cage train for a show. If he is that rowdy, it will take some time. Give all your affections to the hen/pullets!!!!

oohhh! Thanks! I have never had a roo before and i didn't know that would make them mean! Thank you so much!! I was worried that i was doing something wrong with him. The pullets aren't that bad they feed off of him thou and panic when he does... is there anything i can do about that? ( when i come out to see them in the morning i always bring treats for them)

Give the girls meal worms it is crack for chickens, they will get really friendly in a hurry. Throw one towards them and get them closer and closer until they take it out of your hands. I'm with Heather don't handle the roo. I had to cull a very beautiful one that I handled a lot while he was a baby, he turned on me and won't let me even feed the girls, he attacked me every chance he got, until my BF seen him doing it and put a bullet in his head, sounds harsh, but the floggings I got from him were worse.

Young ameraucanas are schizoid! When they are young, they scatter like cockroachs when you turn the lights on. As they begin to get some size and mature they get really friendly and will follow you almost incessantly. I have a three month old wheaten pullet that flies up onto my arm or shoulder while I walk around chirping at me to give her treats. Although she did not develop the muffs and beard, she has won my heart.

This story makes me chuckle a little.

I have had chickens for 35 years and about 5-6 years ago I had someone come to the house looking for a *pet* chicken. A pet chicken? I asked her. Why on earth would you want a pet chicken? I thought the lady was crazy and refused to sell her a chicken for a pet. lol
I am old and the thought back than was people had to be crazy to bring a chicken in the house and have one for a pet. The thought was a bit creepy to me. I loved my chickens and enjoyed them. I loved taking my daughter to 4H and to bird shows. It was a very bonding experience. To me chickens are food.

When my daughter was about 5 her father raised and shows milking goats and sheep, he wanted chickens and ducks. I said yes to ducks and no to chickens. My childhood memories of cleaning coops and flogging from roosters were so unpleasant I did not want anything to do with dirty chickens. Well..I came home one day to a box full of chicks and I bawled my eyes out. I was not going to like those dirty things and that was that..after about a day I was hooked on those little balls of fluff. I loved feeding and caring for them and took my daughter to classes so i could learn about chicken keeping and keeping a coop from becoming gross.

The rest is history..

I have now brooded chicks in my house and actually hugged a chicken..once...lol

Hello
I have some babies from Mr. Jim line but not directly from Him. His birds are beautiful and he is one of the nicest people in birds that I know. He is very willing to help a new comer and has helped me many times. I got my birds from shows birds on this forum and he is a pastor and a very kind person as well . Either would be able to help you . what ever way they could I am sure.

I will send pictures of my babies and show you the lavender ,black , and blues and reds that I was sent. to post on this list. At 6:am I do not remember Mr. Jim's name but he was the past president of the Amercanna club.. I really need some coffee.
