Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Last Week (or was it 2 weeks ago now? I think it was two...) Two weeks ago we got our first Ameraucanas. Mom bought a pair of Point of Lay Pullets. Less than 8 hours later, she was cleaning the coop, and one of them got out, running between the barn stalls and the wall of the barn!! The other was sleeping on the roosts. Mom named them Themla and Louise.
When I came home, we went to another place near where I live, to a guy who sells chickens, and bought a bunch of show Chickens. Bantams, a Polish, and 4 Show Quality Ameraucanas!! :) I named those 4, Harebell, Maiden, Sorrel, and Mariposa. :) (All my poultry names in 2014 revolve around Wildlfowers!)

Here's some pics of my new girls!!
Thelma.

Maiden
Bell

Bell. And yes that is my nose and eyeball. LOL.
Mariposa (Darker blackish) Sorrel (Sparrow patterned almost) and Bell. And my Polish pullet, Daisy, standing in front of everyone. LOL.

Mariposa, Sorrel and Bell again.
Maiden is relatively camera shy. LOL. Thus the "shy maiden" name. ;)

Louise (Front) and Thelma (Back). :)
Cute chicks, but for show quality Ameraucanas, they seem to be seriously lacking in muffs and beards....They don't really even look like Ameraucanas to me.

They sure are cute! With those dark legs, fluffy faces and little pea combs, you have a good chance of getting green or blue eggs!

I really love the coloring of Thelma. Such a rich warm color.

But, they don't look like Ameraucanas, they look like Easter Eggers. The chipmunk patterned chicks point towards EE too. Bell is a creamy color, so might end up a standard Ameraucana color, but since Mariposa and and Sorrel look like EEs, Bell probably is too.

EEs are great fun though. One of the benefits of EEs is that each one looks so different, they are easy to tell apart. :D

Oh, that's fine. I'm just going by what I was told. There were a lot of chicks all in some area at this place. Its a rather small 4H fair, and its my last year showing chickens. I may slip them in a crossbred egg type class, or something, then they'll be retired from show, and be pampered little pets! Do you think that Thelma and Louise are EEs too, or could they be Ameraucanas? They came from a different place. Mom and I were curious. :) Thanks for the info!

They are also EEs. I used to have a girl that looked just like your Louise. She was such a sweet girl

Louise started a little skittish, but now is warming up! She squated for me last Sunday, so I'm just waiting for my mom to send me a picture message of an egg of a different color! Lol. This is exciting. Even though she's not an Ameraucana, we bought them as replacements for our RSLs who are dropping in egg production. :)

I was wondering where to get a couple leg bands for my new show chicks without having to ordering a minimum, I just need 2
Also what age/size should I put them on the chicks

I think the minimum leg bands any store sells is 25. You can get them for a few dollars. You could just go to a dollar store and get those really tiny rubber bands for hair. I used those on my chicks I posted yesterday. I had to wrap them around there leg twice. I think I got a 500 pack for $1. I just didnt see the point in spending $x when they grown out of them so fast.

I used colored zip strips for I'd purposes while they are getting DNA sexed, (i have 10 blue chicks but only want to keep 2 of the girls) but I need perminant leg bands for them to enter in the stock show

You can get permnant leg bands pretty cheap. I know you only want two, but you can buy pack of 25 for a few dollars and have ones left over for the next time. Maybe check premier 1 supplies, Meyer hatchery, and various other website. Can't you just put a different zip tie on them when they get bigger? A lot of people who show around here use zip ties. I had to cut some of some chickens I bought at the last show I attended because they were too tight.

Thanks for the leads on the bands, I was trying to maybe find someone who had a couple aluminum butt end bands they would be willing to sell me so I didn't have to order so many of them but I already have 20 bucks a chick invested so what's a few more dollars for quality bands, lol

400

Thinking of using him as my main Roo, any major reasons why not?
