Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

One of my black AM finally laid the long-awaited first egg on Sunday!! And then another one yesterday. Can't wait to start getting lots more from the others!

Maybe in Washington, not around here. I'd be sitting on a bunch of old ladies if I asked that much for a bird.

I live in Washington! You can get those prices over in the seattle area. I live on the other side of the mountains and people wont pay that much here! I tried to sell my 1 year old laying hens for $15.00 and had to lower them to $10.00 to sell them.In seattle I could have gotten around $25.00! It just depends on where you live and who will pay the price!

We are selling our Easter Egger pullets (5-6 months old) like hot cakes here for $20 a piece... So that price didn't really bother me as much as the seller's attitude. She never did send me pictures of the eggs, and ever question I asked she danced around it... which made me leery. So I just decided to order chicks from Smithey Poultry!

Hopefully there is a black roo in the bunch.

Is Smithy Poultry Paul Smiths birds? Never heard of Smithy poultry.

That sounds about right. Same thing over here. $10 to $15. People are just looking for backyard birds that lay a pretty egg. You can likely get those higher prices from breeders or as you said, people with money willing to spend it.

Can you tell me what you see that does not look show quality. I am learning with mine for the first time

You just can't tell much from pictures, but the blue bird does not have the nice edging that the ones in the lower pic have, she looks a bit washed out. The black hen doesn't appear to have a nice tail(could just be her stance) and seems to have a bunch of loose cushion around the tail. I think nice smooth feathering is more desirable. The combs look suspect, but can't see a clear picture of them. I'm sure they are nice backyard Ameraucana birds, but not in any condition for show. The male looks nice, comb could be smaller (hard to see details) and his stance is a bit upright. Then again, that may not be his normal stance. Hard to tell from pics like I said. The others, they look to be still growing and can't tell anything about them from the pic.

Yes, he got his birds from Paul Smith.

Many people have birds from Paul. My starts came from there also. Btw, I have family down there, just a drive NW of you. My husband was down in your area not long ago, the Pierre Part area. He loved it down there. Wish I could have gone, but had all these dang birds to care for! Keep them babies safe and the gators at bay!

Exactly the same thing here. $15-20 for POL pullets, whether black sex-links or SQ BCM. You may get more for SQ from people that know what they are , but 90% of my customers want a pretty egg basket

I want to buy those birds, but the seller is just stressing me out. It's been like pulling teeth to try and get her to send me any additional pictures, and then the ones she does send are horrible quality and too dark to see anything. I asked her to send more pictures... That I wanted to see a close up of the face & comb, chest, legs, and a picture of the eggs her hens lay. She sent me one picture of the comb. And said "the eggs are smaller than my Marans". No pics of the eggs. I hope she doesn't take it as rude, but I told her I've never spent this kind of money on birds before and if she wants to sell them she will have to send me better pictures. Makes me leery... But could just be my anxiety.

Some breeders are not so good at going the "extra mile" and some will go beyond the extra mile. My best two breeders I bought from either always answered my email questions or sent me photos of the birds they were sending me and sometimes even let me choose which pullet photo I wanted. Just depends on how comfortable you feel with your breeder selection and I found the "extra mile" breeders the best birds I got.

Really? Small world! Lol Yes, my husband loves Pierre Part area as well... We were actually looking at buying a house there or Chackbay/Kraemer area, but ended up deciding to build in Thibodaux! So our chickens will be moving to a new place in the next couple of months but will be living like kings in their new chicken house we are building them! We will certainly have to take extra precautions now that we will have a small canal at the rear of our property. Already seeing plenty nutria!
