Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Alright here we go. These are the best pics I could get. They were all just inches away from me as they were hoping for treats.

Here's the cockerel. Would he be a suitable breeder? Also, would it be worth it to show him? I think he is beautiful but I don't quite know how desirable his characteristics and I don't know hat faults he has. This is a learning post for me. One thing I know is that the fluff around the underside his chin is looking kind of sparse. Maybe it will grow fuller.

Here is my Blue pullet. She has an amazing muff I think. She does have a very lean body but she's still young. Her back slopes a lot toward her tail. She has no leakage other than the small black splotches on some feathers. She's very light colored and without any definitive lacing. I'm hoping to breed her to the cockerel but if neither are worth it I won't bother. They're the only two Ameraucanas I have.

Thank you!

Looks good, Lisa... his tail angle is usually a bit lower? If you'd rather have his brother back, just let me know...

Balthazar is going to be my black breeder this season and I'm not going to cross lines in the blacks, so I've gotta let this guy go... really soon, lol...
Hmmm... How far are you from me? Which line is he from? If Lisa is not interested, I may be.

I'm sorry, I didn't see this until today. I think I am going to stick with the one I have. The girls like him. @KYTinpusher he is from the other half of the group you got from me last May. Same hatch, same breeder.

Sounds good! Just wanted to check with you first... :)

Walli, Lisa covered his line, lol... I'm south of Nashville, 'bout an hour... he's a good cockerel, I just can't justify another pen, lol... let me know if you want him, can probably work something out... :)

ETA: minihorse927 and I are planning a meet up soon, if you want him she said she can bring him your way... :)

Question: if a blue hen has a darker colored head and neck than the rest of her body, does that coloring disqualify her as being the Ameraucana standard?

That is normal.

Consider joining the Ameraucana Breeders Club, the official breeders club for ameraucanas since 1978. You can visit their website and forum. You can read and learn so much from other posts and the bonus if you join is asking questions and getting answers from some of the country's finest breeders. Membership starts at just $12 per year and a wealth of information comes with it!

We have yearly District Meets with an award for best ameraucana of $50. We have a yearly National Meet also that with many awards, prizes and auctions for a chance to get some great birds. There is also a yearly drawing for new members at the end of each year for a fabulous prize. This year's award will be this Premier 1 Brooder Heater, 12"x12", for up to 20 chicks, with the cover.

Members do not need to be present to win. Drawing will held at our 2017 National Meet, at the Minnesota State Poultry Show, 10/28-29/2017, Hutchinson, MN.

To enter, just join the ABC! You can join online at ameraucanabreedersclub.org/membership.html

Also, if you are planning to become a breeder I would suggest joining the American Poultry Association and getting a Standard of Perfection. It is guidebook for exhibitors and breeders to follow. It has a wealth of information in it including pictures of artist's interpretation of what many of the birds should look like. It includes information on faults and disqualifications in all birds.

That depends on where you live.  I only vaccinate for ILT now.

If you live in a warmer climate, you may consider pox vaccine.

I do spray my birds for bugs before I go to help prevent any bugs from hitching a ride home.

I vaccinate for fowl pox, as I have seen birds at shows displaying what looked like dry pox.  I also spritz my birds with Frontline spray before shows, so they don't bring home any unwelcome visitors. :)

I also give the birds going to a show a 10 day course of Denegard before the show, to help prevent CRD.

Thanks Jean and Susan!

I'm going to go out to take some pictures of my cockerel. I hope to get some honest feedback about him. He's 25 weeks old and seemingly blossomed overnight! His muff is way fuller and tail as well. Looks much better than he did at 13 weeks (thank goodness! LOL) but here's the 13 week pics I posted earlier in the thread for comparison. I'll be back in a few to post updated pics. Here's a pic of my pullet as well. Same age 13 weeks. I will post updated pics of her too, for feedback for those interested.

Hey guys! Just bumping these two posts to see if anyone has any feedback? Thank you!

I have a batch in the incubator right now. It's a test hatch, new incubator (Brinsea's New model, Ovation) and young cockerels. I have blue and Blacks, and blue wheaten/wheaten that will all be EE chicks since I haven't separated my groups yet.
