I know that after the eggs have been refrigerated, they lose lots of intensity. I agree, good post, Royce.

I do not believe they judge egg color in showing Ameraucanas. Never heard of them doing it. There are egg shows where you actually show your eggs, but not with the birds that I'm aware of.

Well, Monday eggs wil ship from three breeders.

I'm getting a couple of dozen from Peachick. (Kathy) (I know some of her stock comes from Jean)...
I'm getting a couple of dozen from Wayne Meredith. I like the size of his birds.
I'm getting 18 or so from pasofinofarm (Mellissa)

I'll also stuff in as many of my own eggs as I can (Hens are from Melissa's eggs, Roo is from Jean)

I'm calling it The GREAT BLUE WHEATEN AMERAUCANA HATCH OF 2010
I know I'll get lots of wheaten birds, but I'm just looking for that perfect looking Blue Wheaten pullet or roo.

Last hatch I only got one keeper blue wheaten roo and I'm still waiting to see if he makes the grade as for color and size.
I also only got 5 w/bw pullets last hatch and I'll be rehoming one of them even though she looks good because she ended up with one feather on her left leg.

By June I'm sure I'll be rehoming a bunch of roos and by August or September I'll have to really diminish my laying flock to make room for the new girls.

This will be my last hatch until New Years, 2011.
Hopefully by then I'll be able to use all of my own eggs.

momma-hen- I think I read that they don't judge egg color.

Speaking of egg color-
I put the white egg laying BW hen with an unrelated wheaten roo. I'm going to hatch a few chicks and grow them out to see how they lay.
As for her brother- I am hatching some eggs he fertilized with my orps, cochins, rocks & buttercups. It's the buttercups I'm especially interested in because they lay such white eggs. I hope I get a girl out of their eggs! That way I can see if the roo is also lacking the blue egg gene, before I risk putting some of my girls in with him.
I know the other pullets I have came from such nice blue eggs (thank you grama halo & great grama jean!) so I will have them with the wheaten roo until I have confirmation on the SW. This would mean I can only produce wheaten chicks this fall, but I'd rather play it safe than sell birds that I'm not sure about.

If anyone wants to hatch & grow out some test babies- let me know (free eggs- I'll pay shipping). I won't be able to use the incubator for a while because we're going to be camping again. If I am not reachable online, HBuehler has my phone number.

We entered one with Marans and Ameraucana but my holes were too big for blowing and I put the eggs in upside down for judging. Live and learn. (0:
Its hard to get consistancy with the colored eggs, but I think its good to get them out there to the public even if it means your kids dont win the big cash prize.
I'll do a better job this year!!

Wonderful informative post, Royce. As you and Jean have pointed out before they are a young breed, just APA accepted in 1984, and if you want to raise then you will have to be a part
of the selection process for good ones. And that is for any breed, but the younger ones still have fine tuning. Its impossible to know where the work needs done unless you keep records,
but a bet few people are as exact as those, that they can pinpoint the issue to a bird. Works though, with cockerels as fine as the one you culled your breeders must be amazing.

So I got a call from a breeder friend this week...She had had laying pullets shipped from a well known ABC breeder b/c she wanted blue eggs...when they laid it was the pale color and she was dissapointed.
The she made a big drive and bought more pullets from another breeder who is very vocal on how great their egg color is. Just started to lay...and they are the green, very green color.
She had also bought some for a friend, and his are laying more of a blue color, but it still wasnt what is in the ad. She was very upset. I told her...If she has two roosters in the pen one is contributing
not blue to the offspring. And if she has two pens..well, there is all that genetics going on and you dont really know what you get to you get it.
When you understand it is complicated you appreciate all the more.
