Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

He is a good boy and rules the roost over all other cockerels. (He is natures choice too.) Its just his crow...High pitched and hollow sounding.. Sounds like an owl:rolleyes:
He is the logical choice.. Those blacks with that green sheen are just such eye candy.. Really hard for me to cull two I did. Still need to cull 4 more..

Beautiful well mannered birds..
Thanks

JK! He's gorgeous and a lot of folks would love a roo that sounds more like an Owl.

The Smiths got back to me. (I love the toe slits and punches they use to keep record of pens.)
I got the details back on both of the birds parents. I am going to keep the blue. (Apparently he comes from a good blue egg, and that pen lays a large size egg too..)

He will be the boss... ERR whooo whooo... (At least he only crows in the AM for the most part..

I'd like to post this question here first, since this is pertaining to my Ameraucana. This is a pullet I have from a blue wheaten x wheaten mating. The pen contained both roosters and hens of both wheaten AND blue wheaten variety. I'm totally confused on what a splash wheaten looks like. Can someone please tell me what my girl is?

If this pullet is the result of a Wheaten X BW, then there's no way genetically that you're pullet can be a Splash Wheaten bird. Is that what you're trying to ask?

You have to have 2 copies of the blue gene in order to produce a splash chick. She looks like a very faint BW pullet to me. She's very pretty.

The Wheatens have black color in the tails and wings, the BW have gray. Sometimes you have to look at the wing color
to clearly see it.

I don't have any splash, but they would present with white where the blue or black is.
I think your girl is Wheaten, but I'd check wing feathers to confirm. She is lovely! Very nice beard

Thanks cpartist. I'll check her wings tomorrow. But to my recollection, her wings don't have any color at all...that's the reason for my confusion. I also have 2 wheaten and a blue wheaten from the same breeding. This young lady doesn't have the tail or wing coloring like the others. All of them are young, about 4 1/2 months old. Can't wait to get those first eggs. They were hatched from some gorgeous blue eggs.

sorry it is a bit blurry, but you can basically see the balance and the way it contours

this one's comb is a little big for comparison and has ridges

Hiya CottageGarden! Don't know if you remember but I purchase eggs from you in May. Well I have 12 beautiful birds now. After looking at your pics, I can see why mine are so pretty! I have been lurking on this thread. I will have to post pics of my birds now so you can see how they turned out. I love em.

Sometimes the gray can be very dark as well, adding to the confusion. I had one I thought was Wheaten
but discovered when she threw BW chicks from a Wheaten boy, she was BW. It really doesn't matter, your girl is lovely,
and looks to have nice size and type. While I'm working on good coloring, first and foremost is breeding for size and type...

Here's my 4 1/2 month old blue wheaten boy. I know he's got a lot of maturing and filling out yet. I'm just wondering if he's got any visible faults that I should keep an eye on. It's not the best pic...I'll try to get a better one later. His beard looks pretty rough...he's got 4 ladies that are constantly "grooming" him.

This group is my first chicks that I've hatched and raised...so I've got a lot to learn.
