WOW WOW WOW!!! That is the best look black I have ever seen!!!!!
Where did you get him from...Jean?
You have some really beautiful birds!

I didn't get him from Jean. Sadly I got him from a breeder who tends to throw clean faced birds. Yes, his ladies lay a very beautiful blue egg. But before I ever sell eggs from his lines in the spring, I'm going to test his genes for the muffed/bearded issue. His brother, a blue, I'm fearing has only one allele, so I REALLY hope he's got both. The pullets he is with do, though.

The fact that people breed and sell Ameraucanas with clean faced issues in their flock really upsets me, honestly. Can't they at least test their birds for who's got both and who doesn't? Sure it takes time, but it's worth it.

It doesn't mean they have cleaned faced in their stock but they may be carrying only one allele (like you said). They may look SQ.
It happens....I've also gotten chicks from the top breeders in the country and some of them had disqualifying traits. Those rogue genes pop up occasionally. You just got to cull the ones that are inferior and hatch more

Okay, they have more than one bird with only one allele. .

Out of my hatch, half of the chicks were clean faced. Only 3 actually had a decent sized beard/muffs as a chick. That's pretty bad. And I've heard from others too that their birds from the same stock also ended up either being clean faced or throwing it.

Either way, they still have great type and great egg color, so I'll be working on cleaning up the beards/muffs issue.

Speaking of clean faces, I'm kind of curious what people think of the BWA roo that I got from Mahonri. I know that the clean face is a DQ, which doesn't matter to me, since all I ask is for him to be a gentleman, take good care of his ladies and make pretty EE's. But I'd also like to know, for the sake of knowing, how he is other than the clean face.

Umm . . . . Hate to break it to you but that's an Easter Egger. He's not a Blue Wheaten, but a Gold Duckwing, which isn't available in Ameraucanas. His coloring looks a little like there's a Wheaten allele in there or something, but otherwise, that's a duckwing.

Beyond that, his comb is really tall.
