Some birds are trained to pose like that, with others it is breeding. Many people like the extreme posture and wing carriage and therefore breed for it . I do not, I am more concerned with size and color in my flock.My birds don't stand like that.Their posture while still upright is more like a "normal" chicken because I prefer it. IMO it is more natural looking.

How do I get them to stand up so straight?

You get them to stand like that with SELECTIVE BREEDING.......the only thing you can "teach" them is how to hold the pose on a show carpet for a short period of time while the judge looks at them at a table top show.

Exactly, my buff roo will hold that position if I position him on a table but as soon as I put him down he slouches. I recently sold his son because he held that very upright posture almost all the time.

I was given some serama eggs and hatched out 5. Here are a few pictures. Can you help me with identifying type (smooth, frizzle or silkie), color and sex. I know I'm asking a lot!!!

Has anyone used silkies to hatch serama eggs? Do you let the silkie care for it or transfer them straight to a brooder?

So excited! Alaska has, as of yesterday, 4 hatched out of 9! Can't wait to see if the rest have joined us.

Curious, at what age does anyone separate chicks from mom? Also, when can you start telling the sex on them?
