American serama thread!

I was given some serama eggs and hatched out 5. Here are a few pictures. Can you help me with identifying type (smooth, frizzle or silkie), color and sex. I know I'm asking a lot!!!

I think I have included them all.
I look forward to hearing your feed back. They are 4 weeks.

#1 FRIZZLE
#2 & #3 SMOOTH AND SILKIE [ I THINK]
THE REST ARE SMOOTHS. THE SHAVER WITH THE RED COMB IS A ROO [the first one can't see a comb so ????] So it appears you have just one boy..As for colors its gonna be anymans guess till they are all feathered in .:D

p.s. I do want to add, the 2 chicks in pic 4 & 5 are already exhibiting the upright posture of a serama.... They say: "hey we just doing what comes naturally!" :D

Curious, at what age does anyone separate chicks from mom? Also, when can you start telling the sex on them?

MAMA hen will decide that...and it can be any wheres from one month till ????? when she says: enough kids..leave me alone! :)

In my experiences with seramas, its sorta hit and miss with whos a good MAMA and whos not..If you do have a good broody MAMA use her for hatching & raising the fuzzies.

Ususally you can tell sex by 4 seeks, the roos comb/wattles will start pinking up by then. Also on the lighter colored legs you will start to see the red streak on them.....

The first picture is of this chick in the front wings. So I'm not sure if it is a frizzle or a silkie.

I am new to seramas but I have raised bantam wyandottes for a while now. My question to the serama experts is, if I were to want to get started in seramas, how many birds should I start with? I am not looking to show them or become a breeder I would just be getting them for fun. Would a trio be a good start, and with the diversity of colors out there are there certain colors that will throw a better variety of colors than others? Thanks

Welcome to the WONDERFUL WORLD of SERAMAS!! They are the most uniques creatures on the planet [ but then I am jaded ;) ]

To answer your questions, either a pair of hens or a trio is perfect to start with.

Go to a REPUTABLE breeder to make sure you are actually getting 100% bonified seramas. There are alot of people out there that mix them with other breeds and try to pass them off as the real thing. Once you add another breed (like Old English, most common) you change their personality and THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT!
As for colors, it is like opening up a box of chocolates, you just never know what you are going to get, and that too makes them so much fun.

Just get what YOU think is pretty, thats all that matters.....
Have fun looking and don't hesitate to ask questions... :D
