American serama thread!

It really is. The egg that pipped was actually from a frizzled pair(only the roo was frizzled. So I hope mine is frizzled

I hope you get a frizzle. I just checked under my frizzle avatar hen-no pips-nothing. They might be late, but...

I keep telling myself not to get greedy. I have nine healthy serama chicks-three from the frizzle hen' eggs. I've read a number of posts from people that had nothing hatch, so I guess I've been pretty lucky.

Me to. I have gotten greedy. I have had 80% percent hatches recently. I need to stop

Fun, yes and interesting. But breeding to type is difficult. I've culled my original 11 serama to 3 for breeding. So far, of the second generation, I have kept a single pullet. If it were easy I guess it would not be as fun; at least not for me. Now I have two more chicks I have hopes for.

I agree.

I've been handling my one "keeper" pullet quite a bit. I have been having good luck with very tame broody hens. Today I needed to run a quick errand, so instead of putting Midget back in the coop my wife offered to hold her until I got back. Now she is hinting she would like to have the pullet as a house pet. I know tame parrot species often do not make good breeding stock as they prefer to be with people rather than caring for a nest of eggs or babies. I've never had a chicken as a house pet, so for those that have, do these birds make good breeders? I want the pullet for a breeder and broody more than as a pet. but I also want my wife happy too.

Impatience got the better of me. I candled Frizzy's eggs and all four are still good and just starting to pip internally; a bit late, but yeah! More chicks. I'm hoping they will be like or better than the mom.
