American serama thread!

Great! Well if fertility is good and all goes as planned, PM if you decide to get eggs from me

My wife asks how much you will be selling the eggs for. How long before you know about fertility, etc.?

So this is Chevron, one of my 12 Seramas. I noticed today that her wattles are getting bigger and turning red (When I got her two weeks ago they were almost non-existent, and pink)
Sooooo this means she's nearing lay, right? I have no clue how old she is. But if she is indeed nearing lay, that means this tiny little girl is about done growing? Pic one is to show her size, pic two is to show her comb and wattles. I will weigh her today if I get a chance, and get some pics of the roo I think is the same age. I got them from a great breeder who was very informative and had beautiful breeding stock. I just totally forgot to ask when they hatched. I got eight of assorted ages, and this one's the oldest.

And just for fun, here's my nine month old hen, Reiph (Pronounced reef), who, me thinks, is an AA (Beside an orange juice carton for reference) She hatched from a type A pair, her brother is type A and all my other 11 Seramas seem to be type A. She is tiiinnnny next to them

And here's what they'e in for winter (They get to go out in a wind safe brooder during warmer days) They're in a barn in a bigger-than-it-looks dog crate with two heat bulbs. It's very warm in there :-D And yes, the black stuff is around the bottom few rows of holes because little tiny Reiph kept escaping

I will test fertility in early March. Maybe February. Since i will just be starting to sell eggs I will sell them for $15 plus shipping. We can work out how many eggs you want if this works for you.

Cute! Keep us posted! She might lay in a month or so since her vent might not be big enough to lay an egg

Likely, she is getting to the age of laying eggs. Some of my hens did grow after starting to lay eggs; certainly filling out. Other pullets stopped growing at 3 months.

I like tiny Seramas but I Hope she grows a little more for her sake since the Roos are a good but bugger hand her
What age do Seramas usually start laying and will they start now or wait til spring even if they ae old enough? I haven't been doing seramas long and got ny first hen at at year old and she was already laying. Her chick, Reiph, hasn't started laying yet at nine months but being micro she maybe never will :-/

Here's a general size reference of six of the pullets I think are the same age. I couldn't get the others to hold still :p Comb and wattles are still tiny and pink. Any age guess?

I think this one is Wheaton. She will NOT hold still. What do you guys think about colour?

Here's the cockerel I think is the same age as Chevron. He's starting to get that upright posture and I think I heard a pitiful crow from him

Mine started to lay between 3-7 months; most around 4 months. I have a one young pullet that I hope will be laying soon. I do not expect her to wait until spring as my birds are under lighting with a timer so their day is longer. Most likely yours will lay before spring if she is matured enough.

Okay, thanks for the info! What kind of lighting are you using and how can you set it up? My hen who was already laying has stopped and I would like her to start again. Mine are under infrared heat, and it doesn't seem to work the same.

I am in CA....Do you ship birds? Do you sell eggs?

I've got eggs from a young white-legged Blue & Silver Silkied Serama hen
and a smooth-feathered Blue & Silver hen with yellow legs.
The Fathers are Silkied with yellow legs.

About a dozen eggs total. I'm not going to let any more of my hens set on eggs until Spring.
You can have them if you want them?
