American serama thread!

These 2 hatched in the same group, within 2 days of each other, 16-18 days ago. Check out the difference!

I was worried that the small one wasn't going to thrive and was going to die. But I gave her some NutriDrench and she is hanging in there.

So cute!

I have never had a broody. I've only had these seramas less than a month and I'm growing out bantam cochin hatchery chicks. I'm hoping to have a few broodies by next summer. I think I'll let the serama girls hatch whatever they brood on. I wouldn't mind for my serama population to multiply :]

Careful what you wish for lol!

Every one of my OEGB hens that were old enough to brood this past summer did so (like 6, I think), plus my bantam cochin hen, and my duck started it all off! Also one large fowl lav orp, and I even had a golden comet go broody! I had chicks hatching almost weekly for several weeks! :D

I hope the others start laying for you soon! I'm gonna weigh their eggs now. I'll report back soon XD

:fl let us know.

Holy Moley! That is quite the difference in age! I'd say since the little one is passed the two week mark, she will make it :)

*I* am okay with that..my husband...ehhh not so much!

Wowee...That's a lot of broodies though.

The smaller one on the left is 14.5g and the bigger one on the right is 18g.

Question. Have you guys done the finger test on seramas to see if they're laying or close too laying? On LF birds if you can fit 3 fingers between the pelvic bones they're either laying or will be soon. I got got a quad this week and noticed today one of them squatting for me. They're 5 months old. The cockerel was also mounting a different pullet. The 3rd pullet doesn't seem as close to lay as the others as her comb is paler. If anyone gets a chance will you check the pelvic bones of your layers and report back? I would be forever grateful!

:]

Edit to add- on the pullet that was squatting for me I was able to fit my index finger without too much wiggle room between the pelvic bones. On the one being mounted I was able to fit a finger between but the bones were touching either side of my finger.

Wow so it turns out the pullet laid exactly 2 weeks after squatting for me. I see that mentioned a lot but I'm happy to see it first-hand.

Now, as far as the finger test goes..

I am able to fit 1 and 3/4 fingers (index and most of middle) between the pelvic bones on either side of the vent. Just in case someone was wondering..

Also, the night before they laid I was checking their pelvic bones again and felt an egg in their shell gland. If you place your fingers centered on the pelvic bones on either side of the vent, and then move one fingers width vertically downward and also inward slightly (on the outside of the body, not IN the vent!) you can gently palpitate that area and feel the egg from the outside of the body. I was amazed to find the 2 pullets had their first eggs in there, laying on the same day! It's so great!

Anyway, I always have questions that apparently no ones ever thought of or answered before, so I'm uploading this golden information out there to the interwebs for all the other question askers out there! I searched to see if you can feel an egg from the outside of a pullet/hens body, and if so, where to feel for it. I ended up having to get vigilant and look at necropsy photos and charts of the anatomically correct placement of the shell gland. Found a bunch of innerds strung out on tables to show but the placement was definitely not correct. Hope it helps someone!

I'm thinking one of these came from my girls egg, and one from MPC eggs, but I don't have a silkied Serama, so could mine carry the gene without showing it? These are both silkied. (yeah!)

Good info! Thanks for sharing.

I'll have to feel my girls tomorrow night when I put them in for the night. (they still insist on sleeping outside, and I have to put them each in by hand. Ugh!)

Can I get some opinions on my cockeral?

He is 5-6 months old and I am hoping to breed him. I just purchased him from a breeder who was willing to let him go because of size (19.1 oz). He was the only C out of his hatch, the rest looked to be A and B. I do hope to breed him to my serama hen (16oz) and OEB (14 oz), .

I have never shown before though and since my eye for judging traits is still developing I would really love to hear your opinions of his strengths and vaults.

I should note though that he has had no training at all so his pose is natural and could probably be improved a bit with some work.

Pretty boy.
I like his conformation and his tail. Love his color. Maybe as he gets a little older he will stand a little more upright and get more vertical with his wings. As he matures and gets exercise, his pectorals will get better. Are you planning on showing him?

Theres an old saying: "you can't make a silk purse with a sows ear". He is a cutie-patootie serama BUT if you want to breed for show quality he is just not gonna do it for you. IF you just want to breed for funnzies, GO FOR IT :weee The competition out there in the SCNA and ASA sanctioned TT shows is pretty stiff. Here is some of the birds you might come up against..
