American serama thread!

froggiesheins-

Thanks for your input! I have never been to a show before but am hoping to hit up a few this spring.
Eventually I would like to get into breeding show quality but I also want to work a bit on a breeding program and a more reliable incubation system. My daughter will likely only show in 4-H when she is old enough, but if she likes it I could see us getting more serious about it.
The pictures you posted are gorgeous and givery me a much better idea of the ideal. Those roos seem to be "thicker" if you will, does that kind of filling out come with age? Mine is about 5 months and was at the bottom of the ranks before I got him. I am hoping some of the scraggly look will diminish a bit now that he isnt getting picked on. But I can see I need to look for one quite a bit more vertical and stylish as well.

I hope to get him out a bit this spring at some open shows. I haven't seen the show schedules for this spring but last year there werent too many in eastern Iowa, unless I was looking in the wrong places. The overall goal is to have some show quality seramas by the time my daughter is ready to start 4-H in 2 years. I would like to eventually have a show quality breeding program established as well, but recognize that will take much longer and probably require a significant investment in quality birds. I am from a family of very competitive Black Angus cattle breeders and am very familiar with selective breeding but obviously this is a whole other deal. Right now my goal for this year is to get familiar with the breeding process and the Serama standard.

Theres an old saying: "you can't make a silk purse with a sows ear". He is a cutie-patootie serama BUT if you want to breed for show quality he is just not gonna do it for you. IF you just want to breed for funnzies, GO FOR IT :weee

The competition out there in the SCNA and ASA sanctioned TT shows is pretty stiff. Here is some of the birds you might come up against..

Is she Exchequer?

I've been trying to understand/learn the difference between exchequer and mottled.

When you talk about the serama standard are you discussing TableTop showing OR in cage ABA/APA shows?
The best place to learn about serama for TT showing is here: SCNA http://www.scnaonline.org/
OR ASA http://www.americanseramaassociation.org/Home_Page.html OR Serama USA https://www.instagram.com/seramausaclub/
For in CAGE showing (which includes 4-H) Seramas have to fall under accepted breeds & colors so u can compete in cage at the shows.
American Poultry Association is a great place to get info on showing too.

I am open to either option. I am leaning towards the traditional serama and the Table Top shows, which peak my interest a bit more than the cage shows, however when I look on the APA site it looks like there isn't much in my area listed for 2017 (only 1 so far) I am hoping more will be listed as the year goes on.

I have browsed those sites quite a bit. Lots of info there, thanks.

I think I'm about to fall in love with Seramas

. What beautiful little birds. Would it be possible to start keeping just a pair of them, a rooster and a hen in a little coop of their own? Or would that lead to over-mating and stress for the hen and frustration for the roo?
