American serama thread!

So we had a sad day today. I went out to feed this morning and Belle had passed away. She was all ruffled up and sitting in a corner looking quite comfortable. Does anyone have any ideas what to do about her mate Taco?
It was just the two of them alone in a coop, Taco fights with the big birds so we had them separated. I have Turtle and Elena but they are still quite a bit smaller than him and young. Turtle is very feisty and I'm sure he and Taco will get into it as soon as they get the chance. I brought him inside this evening and he seems glum. Definitely not as rambunctious as usual.

So sorry to hear that she passed. Maybe put the younger ones in a cage next to him. At least he will have company.

Will he be ok being confined do you think? Their brooder is across the yard from his coop/run. I could put him in a rabbit cage next to the brooder. I have him inside with us tonight, he's diapered so he can just hang out and roost where ever he likes.

thank you. We've had quite the string of deaths lately. 1 roo to a dog attack, 1 to the cold, a week old chick to being pecked to death, another to cross beak, and now Belle. No idea what even got her! Theres been no change in ANYthing... and Taco seems healthy, just sad.

On the roost-stuck Serama newcomers, I'd say take a chair as close as you can get, and a good book, and a tray full of feed and water. Talk quietly to them, just be companionable, and soon they should realize that there is no threat. You can also take each down/out (with care--last thing you need is scared chooks running amok!) and hand-feed/hand-water them, sit and just hold/gently pet and talk to them. Take your time, but do make sure that they are eating/drinking, even if you have to hold a cup of feed and a cup of water for them to eat and drink right there on the roost!

I would never sell young Serama chicks without an excellent reason and to an experienced person. Serama chicks tend to be on the fragile side, in my very limited experience, so with the momma they stay until they are sturdy enough to get by.

Peepit and her 11 CastleDelight chicks are thriving, and I'm handfeeding the ravenous mob mealworms almost every day, and that means getting to pick up a few of them, cuddle and pet, give them a 'private snack' and gently put them back down. Seems to be working...the handled ones are always the first to my palm of mealies. Some REALLY interesting colors coming up, I think--they change, it seems, every day.

I would keep him away from the others, because you don't know what killed his mate - could be something contagious.
