American serama thread!

I do take a little extra care of my Serama babies. I grind the chick food so the crumbs are smaller. I also give them a bit of crumbled boiled egg yolk and sav-a-chick supplement once or twice in their water.

ill go ahead and start to do that for them. I am curious if your remember what gender the chicks in your pictures ended up being ? Do you still have them?

A convenient alternative to grinding food finer is sifting the crumbles with a mesh pasta strainer, you can get lots of fine particles that way. Also you should use the "quail bottom" waterer for them, as for the first few weeks they have the potential to drown in a standard chick fountain. I see you've got pebbles in there, so just keep a close eye! Other than that, pretty much normal care. I tend to keep my smallest chicks under a lamp until week 10 instead of week 8, but that's me being paranoid, I think.

Seramas in my experience start showing their roosters pretty early in the game, but I have also had two "this is def a rooster" turn out to be hens. They will tempt you to jump the gun on sexing. Don't give in!

i will keep them in for a few months. I want them to be able to be big enough to dodge my Mille Fluer . She's sweet though( to me) lol maybe not the new comers. Plus they are tiny! They could crawl right through the wire.

So my one lone Serama egg is in the incubator & now on day 21. He's moving in there but no pip. I think he's broken...
How long is long enough to give Serama eggs in the incubator? It's been sitting around 99.5-100

If you see an internal pip and it has been awhile, I would external pip him at the air cell artificially. Serama are delicate, perhaps weaker than other chicks, and I've had seemingly healthy internal pippers die without pipping externally. Then it is a matter of assisting the hatch as usual, this guide is good. I've had some chicks come as late as day 22 heading on to 23, but once that internal pip is done it is a race against the clock! If it hasn't internally pipped and is still moving, all one can do is give them time. I have heard say of artificial internal pipping before, but there's no way to know when it is an appropriate time to help, and you risk killing them as easily as helping.

I hope they make it for you! I know you've been wanting a serama for awhile... Here is Chip, a lone hatcher from day 22, to give you some hope! He managed to get out all on his own even though it was my first hatch in a crummy styrofoam incubator that had mad temp fluctuations and weird humidity problems.

I came in to check on him & the pip was on the side I couldn't see! He went from this to this in a half hour. Is this looking alright? I'm guessing they need to take a break but I don't want him to do that shrink wrapping thing...

He is peeping off & on & you can see his little tongue licking.
I think you're right, TJ, it may run a little lower I think. There's 3 thermometers in there & they all say the same thing around 100•
I put him in this one because the other foam one was so big & just not staying level. I guess I figured after I got down to one that was making it to lockdown he'd be better in this one. Next time I might just buy my own foam one instead of borrow.

Well, I have 4, so far which is great! But they all look like they have a chipmunk-type pattern. Could they be OEG or Quail? Ha! The breeder was hurried and charged us half of what they originally said, I think to get me to leave them alone. Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants...

He looks good to me! The membrane looks perfect. The only one I lost had a really thick, brown membrane and you could tell the texture wasn't thin and papery like it should be.

See how he pipped too low in the already too small air cell? The membrane was too wet, not nice and white like yours, and it dried into cement. He had bubbles in the pip too, around his beak. I tried to save him, but there was just too much going on. Yours looks great! Give him time.
