American serama thread!

Well.... Just candled my eggs again. (I set Serama eggs about once every 4 days so I am getting to candle all the time

) Since I was so discouraged about my chicks not making it I sort of just quit checking the eggs in the incubators. I haven't even been collecting their eggs hoping they will go broody and give me a break lol.

Anyway I candled tonight and it turns out that my black frizzle hen is laying fertile eggs now

. She is in with a young cockerel so I guess he has things figured out now. I have about 5 or so eggs from her that are developing, and my hen that has been laying... (about 1/3 of her eggs are fertile) has quite a few eggs developing as well. And to top it off one of my pullets that is in with a frizzle roo started laying last week (I doubt they are fertile yet but I'll check soon)! So I should have a better chance of hatching chicks now. The hen I have been getting eggs from just isn't doing so hot fertility wise, well I say it is her... I think it is the rooster she is with. He is borderline Micro, she is a B class so it shouldn't be her. It really doesn't matter if neither one of them are fertile because I am SO attached to them, it is just nice to have the others picking up the slack for them.

Now if my last little pullet will just start laying I will be in business... I honestly think the chicks I get from her pen will be the best out of all my pairs, the pullet is really tiny though so I may be going through fertility/laying issues with her. Hopefully she grows more and I don't have any problems.

So I fell off the Serama wagon and now I am back on lol.

If you are setting every 4 days, you're opening the incubator too often unless you are hand turning. It changes the humidity level when you add eggs. I usually only add eggs every 7-9 days. 1st set - day 9 - I candle the first set and take out anything that hasn't developed add new eggs and adjust humidity so it stays just about where it was before adding eggs. On day 16-17 I put the lst group on lockdown, the 3rd week is hatching week. What do you do for lockdown, do you have another incubator your use for lockdown.

Quote: I have another incubator for hatching in. I don't hand turn but I figured people still have hatches that work great when they open the incubator 3 times a day to turn. I am not in there long, I don't even take the eggs out to candle, just put the flash light up to top of them and I can easily see if they are developing or clear. I take the clears out (I don't bother checking the eggs that haven't been in the incubator for more then a week) and leave the rest. I don't necessarily candle every time I add eggs, some times I am just too lazy or in too big of a hurry. I would say I candle about every other time, which is about once a week.

With the other eggs that I have set, I have set at about the same rate and went through the same routine and had great hatches. Different breeds though, silkies, cochins, and silkieXCochins.

My biggest problem is infertility, either because one or the other is still too young or because (I assume) my male is too small. My youngest serama are creeping up on 5 months old and I only have 1 pen that both birds are full grown.

Ok so I signed up for the Hatch Along. I have eggs and what better to do in Wintery weather right? I have a very broody hen and another laying that I was considering taking her eggs and setting her with some eggs that I would buy so she should be ready to set by then. I want some frizzles now so I am gonna try too find some for that setting.

I need to invest in some leg bands so what type have some of you used and what type would recommend? Thank the Lord for all your experience!

Beats me. I'm in the same boat lol. I've been able to tell all my chicks apart from the beginning... but things are starting to get a bit blurry when it comes to who is who. Especially since the only thing that has been different in my chicks is an extra tiny brown/black dot on their head or back. and they are growing up almost identical, especially where the boys are concerned.

I've looked at a lot of bands for chicks but I don't want to buy some that I can never use. Not sure how big to get them for the grown birds either. Next year I'll buy me some SCNA bands, but until then I have to figure something out for what I am hatching now.

Those spiral keychain wristbands do a great job in sorting out chicks. You can buy the cheapies on Amazon, and you get 12 loops of 6 colors for arund $5. Cut the loops into 1.5 loop pieces, and you get about 30 legbands per wristband. Very easy to put on new hatches, and they grow very easily with the bird without pinching. I think they're a super idea for identifying chicks.
