Thank youAll your birds are so PRETTY![]()
I think I knew what it was but forgot so here goes, most popular large fowl is Orpington, most popular bantam is CochinSo I have the APA yearbook and finally got the numbers for breeds shown in 2022. Yes, I got this book months ago but it has taken me a while to get through it because I am very busy!
This is the start of last year’s post about it, and here are the results to compare numbers. If you’re curious, Redcaps are no longer the least popular breed! There are 4, so that is more than zero.
Disclaimer, numbers are difficult from 2021. This could be because it is the second year doing it so more shows are reporting numbers. It could be because many shows were cancelled due to avian influenza. It could be due to the fact they were no longer coming out of Covid.
So everyone, guess the most popular large fowl chicken, bantam chicken, duck, and goose!
There is a (slightly upsetting) upset so you might get a surprise!
Obviously only guess if you haven’t read the article.
Oooo, I haven’t looked this year.
LF - Ameraucana
Bantam - OEGB?
Duck - Calls
Goose - no idea![]()
Normally, I would wait, or put the answer in spoilers, but there is no hiding the fact that you are right!Sebastopol
I agree, and have noticed the same. Even here, where "pet" keeping is pretty much non-existent, and almost all birds are expected to become decent dinner, there has been a massive increase in bantam keeping and breeding. It is less costly, and easier on people. As more and more pet keepers get into it, they're also searching for the more "cutesy" breeds. Heck, I've strongly considered only doing bantams, after only having them for a year (even less, actually), while I've been doing LFs for a decade. It worries me greatly, that we are going to lose a lot of amazing breeds, and the knowledge of their peopleTo me, this means a dramatic decrease in LF showing, which could mean an overall loss of LF breeding.
