Amprolium Questions

So sorry your hen is sick. :hugs You can give her the Harker's undiluted if she is not drinking enough medicated water. The dose I would use is 20 mg/kg once or twice a day. With the Harkers, here is the math:
1 / 2.2 x 20 / 38.4 = ~0.25 ml (1/4 cc) per pound of body weight

As everyone else already said, yes, you can use the two at the same time.

Thank you very much, @casportpony :hugs

Sadly lovely Runa died in the night. She was in a box but in view of her sisters where they were roosting. She was my favourite hen, so friendly.

Thanks for your helpful advice. I have sent away for a faecal sample kit which tests for coccidia and worms to ensure the good health of the rest of the flock and I will continue with the amprolium treatment since I started it. I am now also registered with a chicken vet website which links me to a vet with an interest in poultry less than 25 minutes from me so that will help for the future.

Feeling like a bit of a failure and fairly heartbroken to have lost my two friendliest hens in half a week but I'm holding to the fact they had a year of what I hope was a good life here.

:hugs I'm sorry to hear about Runa, what a lovely girl!

Do you plan on sending the body for necropsy?

Sorry to hear about your runa. You did try all you could and I'm sure your hens know that they are loved and cared for more than they started out. I too have ex batts and they are such a lovely hen. So inquisitive and friendly. Unfortunately it is in the genetic makeup of them that they will tend to suffer from internal problems long before a purebred hen. I have lost two this year and it is upsetting but I'm happy in the knowledge I gave my best for them and they managed to get to 3yrs 8 mths. I still have 3 and I'm beginning to notice the decline in health if one of them. I will do all I can but sometimes all you can do is be there for them and make the right decision at the right time.

Unfortunately my parents disposed of her body thinking to do me a favour. :barnie The chickens are part of our family flock which live here at my family home (where I also work) but I live at my own place at the other end of the village. My mother lets the chickens out and discovered that Runa had died when she went out very early this morning to see to them. They didn't want me to be upset by having to deal with it and doing a necropsy wouldn't even have occurred to them... actually it never occurred to me until I saw it discussed on this forum!

I should've mentioned it yesterday but actually I didn't think Runa would die in the night, more fool me. I've let them know that necropsy is an option if we're unsure of the causes of death in future cases (if I can find someone to do it which I think won't be an issue).

Thanks for the kind words.

@CCUK - thank you also. I'm sorry to hear about your losses as well. I am also down to 3 ex-batts now but the flock as a whole numbers 17 as my parents have various breeds. The ex-batts are by far the friendliest, most interesting and fun and I will do my best to take good care of the others.
