Due to shortages and supply problems, I've twice recently had to buy layer feed instead of all-flock type feed with 16 percent protein instead of 18-20%.
Both times the flock, which normally takes roughly 2 weeks to eat 100lbs of feed, finished the layer feed about 2 days faster than usual.
It seems that the birds' bodies know how much protein they need and eat extra layer feed in order to make up for the deficiency.
Layer costs less per bag, but I doubt it saved any money because they ate more.
Has anyone else experienced this?
