an off topic, less moderated 18+ section?

Really interesting discussion!

We've been running byc for over 11 years, and forms in general for about 15. We've adjusted our rules around topics and tone over that time to try to find the proper balance between allowing every topic and discussion, vs discouraging and even not allowing some topics. Similarly, balancing too much moderation, and not enough. It's impossible to find a perfect balance for everyone all of the time, we feel like we've achieved a pretty amazing mix that is a good fit for our specific community. That's not to say that our stand is permanent and will never change, but at our core, we feel pretty confident about the tone we strive to maintain within this amazing group!

other forums do it no problem
Yes, it is true that some forums are able to pull this off, but it's actually pretty rare. I belong to a private community of large Forum owners, and we discuss this topic pretty often. Overwhelmingly, most large Forum owners have rules on which topics are and are not appropriate, even if it's not stated in their rules, or publicly in their forums. It's actually been very interesting over the years to see other forums experiment with this, and then regret doing so, and quickly going back to their previous stance. While there are some pros to having a less moderated Forum, or Forum section, the cons quickly consume the pros... At least on most communities.

So, again, we appreciate the discussion, feedback, and ideas. We're always looking for ways to make byc better for all of our visitors!

Some people enjoy talking politics. And some get very heated about it. I'd be happy if it were in a thread that I knew to avoid. I just wouldn't click on it.
My own sister dirties my FB thread with her political garbage. I can't un-friend my sister (although I'd like to some days, when she gets on a roll! lol)
But if those discussions were in their own place, it would be a door I'd never open!
I just unfriended my own grandmother for the same reasons. I can't do political discussions. I get too passionate and angry.

@Melky there is already an off topic for off topic discussion, its not like that would be a new thing, there would just be a place that adults didnt have to walk on eggshells. people talk about all of these things I mentioned earlier already all over the site, it muddies up threads, gets people off topic and causes frustration then people get warnings etc just for having an adult conversation. If you didnt want to have access to it you wouldnt have to go into it. Nobody would be forcing anybody into conversation, it would just be a safe place to have a thought and it would help keep all the trash out of the rest of the forums.
I can start a PM for you, it is very similar to a thread, except not just anyone can view it.
The only problem is we can only invite 20 people.

Some of the contests (like the "other hobbies" contest, for example) have also allowed members to identify others with similar interests, beyond chickens, etc.
Exactly! I was allowed to confess my hobby of eating cheese off of feet!

Seriously, the new BYC allows too much in the “family” areas, and I most certainly don’t want children there. However, in other areas I can say outrageous things that younger members should not be into.
I don’t want to see your baby on your breast in any picture on education threads. Especially your profile picture. I will never be okay with the word, “suc**” in the educational threads. But go for it in the random ramblings.

I couldnt agree more.

@Melky I'm not saying we need a place to behave badly, you are taking it to an extreme. I simply said a less moderated section that we could have more adult conversations and not influence the younger people with our ideas. as you yourself said chicken enthusiast typically have other interests.

just because you don't want it doesn't mean it wouldn't benefit others.. all things on this site are not moderated equally.

I dont do FB or any other social media and i'm very close to leaving BYC

This is curious. Why would you want to leave?

I can't answer for him exactly but it gets old when people constantly complain about their feelings being hurt when they read something. Just move on if you don't like what you are reading...is what I say.
