Ancona Ducks

Haven't posted any pictures for awhile. Ana and Elsa. My son refusing to change the names even though Elsa turned out to be a drake.

They came from Splendid Toad Art Farm, and actually, our male is on the very top picture of their anconas :3c  I wrote them this afternoon to inquire where they got their stock from originally, because from what I see, he is one of their starting ducks when they got anconas to breed.  So I guess he's something like 4 years old, as is the light female.

That would make sense then. Kim (owner of that farm) has some gorgeous birds. But those look like they may have been some of her culls. That would explain the small bodies, long necks, etc. Not stock she would breed. She like larger bodied, heavy built birds with proper body type etc.

I'm not totally shocked by that, because the male and light female were both fully grown when the people got them (the people we got them from), and they told me a story about how they'd already been burned before getting Cayugas (got 5 males and a female rather than the other way around because they had no idea what they were buying). But I do find it funny that the male would be considered a cull because he was right at the top of their pictures for anconas--wouldn't you think they'd want to use all the best for those shots? Lol, I dunno, but thanks for the info. I guess it means we'll have to get a couple of ducklings this coming spring because I am very much interested in preserving the breed, no idea where from now.

Is what it is, I guess, but omigosh these are the cutest ducks. I'd say personality-wise they are among the funniest that we have now. And check out our male's racing stripe feet <3

i had a question. how do you get your ducks into their coop at night? i had to separate my hens from my drakes and i let the hens out to free range with the chickens and when it was time for bed i couldn't get them in the coop single handed in fact i had to pick both of them up and physically put them both in the coop. any tips?

Mine have always just gone in at night by themselves. When they were little we use to have food and water in there, so at night they would go in to eat and we would just shut the door behind them. Now I just wait until it starts to get dark and go out and most of the time they are inside. There has been a few times they have given us trouble. There coop is in the side yard which is fenced off, so I herd them to the side yard and shut the fence, then they are in the coop within an hour and I go shut the door.

I haven't posted for a while. These are my three black and whites all grown up! And my white and lilac pair that I added quite a few months ago.
