I started receiving hatchery catalogs in the mail last week. Now I'm worse than Santa Claus, making my list and checking it twice.

After retrieving my silver spangled hamburg hen from various and sundry places she should not have been, there is a house ban on "flighty, useless yard art".

So my question is, what type of temperment do anconas have? Flighty and high strung like MY andalusians and hamburg? or calm and docile like OUR barred rocks, delawares, sex-links, etc.

From what I have seen of them there a little on the flighty side. I would say a lot like a Leghorn or in your case a Andalusian. I will said they are a excellent layer and a very nice looking bird.

I have leghorns in four different colors -- and I wouldn't consider any of them especially flighty.

Last year I had two anconas for awhile -- and they WERE most definitely flighty.

Also, my anconas really didn't seem to appreciate confinement. They were attractive, but I think I would just as soon have my mottled (exchequer) leghorns.

I know this is an old post... but to give info for anyone searching the posts for Anconas:

I have 3 Ancona chicks 4 weeks old out with some other breed chicks (Ameraucanas, Marans, etc.) and the Anconas are the most curious ones. They will eat out of my hands and jump up into my lap and let me pet them while they gobble up the food. They kind of freak out if I move too quickly or lean down over them, but as long as I am sitting in a chair or moving slowly they are very friendly and have loads of personality.
