Angry!! Just left the Vet's office...

*shakes head* I am always amazed at vets (and rescue people) who get the attitude that everyone mistreats their animals. My husband and I adopted a dog at the local SPCA about 6 years ago, and for four weeks we talked to puppy psychologists, we missed work, we walked the dog (I'm not kidding) every two hours, all night long.. And when he continued HOWLING and peeing and pooping (no worms, we took care of those too) if we left the house for 15 seconds, we finally had to take him back. We brought him back with a 5 page psychological report, toys, his bed, his food, medication, everything. They treated us like we were dirt for bringing him back. I was standing there BAWLING. He was a complete sweetheart when we were home, but we needed to work, we couldn't just stay home... Gah.

Thankfully my vets office is amazing, and when we had to put our kitty down last month they were so gentle to her, and us... And the best part is that the owner owns chickens, so even though only 1 of the 3 vets in the office can take our chicks, we don't have to try to track down a different vet, we can just take her to the same vet who knows our puppy and kitties.

I probably know more about animals that she does at this point.

My wife studied to be a vet. Ill wager the tech knows more than you think and because you were angry, you belittled her. I do agree that because of spindoctoring and media ratings competition, everyone is either an animal abuser or criminal in someones eyes these days. Perhaps you should study to become a vet and bring your knowledge to help?

I have to admit I have had some nice vets and not so nice ones - about 3 years ago me and my husband were out of town during july 4 and had asked someone to please bring dogs inside when fireworks started - she forgot, to make matters worse a storm started that turned bad ( almost hurricane bad ) well dogs being dogs found a way to get out of yard - one got hit by car, one was never found , one was abused by local kids down the road. We had to put down the hit by car dog and the other was really messed up but when we went to vet first thing vet said " put her to sleep she will be no good after this " NO GOOD !!! what the h***? she is my baby so we went to another vet who said she would recover but never be the same ( she had a broken pelvis on both sides minor head injury and a damaged front leg she can no longer use) but I wanted to slap the crap out of that vet that said she would be no good- she is not a hunting dog, not a breeding dog so no for those reasons she is no good LOL but for me she is the best friend to have when I am lonely , sad , or just want someone to hog the couch during a movie LOL but my no good dog cost me a fortune that day at the vet but 3 years later she is still here being momma dog to all who come here - and with 3 legs runs faster than them all when treats are coming LOL

Elderoo, I did not belittle her. I try to be polite to everyone that I encounter. I didn't even interrupt her during her speech. I waited until she finished and then corrected her on every incorrect thing that she said to me. I was not upset the whole time I was at the vet's office. I was calm and collected because that's the best way to handle any situation. I realize that it's an emergency office and they must have been full. So I'm sure that's why I was in the waiting room (alone) for an hour before my dog was taken back. One of the vet's had delivered her baby a month early so they were a vet short. I was very understanding about the whole situation. I know that I'm not the only person in the world that has had a dog hit by a car. I did not expect special treatment. However, I do expect to be treated and spoken to in a manner that the vet tech did not do. I know that vet techs require special schooling in order for them to work in their profession.

After the vet tech was done with me, I did not take my attitude to any other employee in the office. Everyone else treated me nicely. I was actually having a fairly nice time. I was outside in a rocking chair just enjoying the evening. So, there was no anger involved in this situation until that little vet tech finished her ignorant speech.

So there!

I know the attitude you're talking about. Just because I decided that I did not want to pursue a degree or a title in a certain field does not mean that I do not have an extensive knowledge of the subject and I'd rather not be talked down to when I'm trying to do the best for my animal.

Speckled Hen, I totally hear you there.
My hubby has a psych degree and when I tell him his mother is a hystrionic psychopathic narcissistic paranoid obsessive compulsive OLD BAT, he asks where I got my psych degree.

I tell him from The Lacy Family Bat Cave U.

(I must go post this in the Mother in law thread.

I never presume someone knows less than me. I would probably be wrong.

A couple of years ago, Jackson (who shares the title of best dog in the world with my current companian Max the Scottie), my lab/cocker mix was 15 and started having seizures. I took him into the vet that night. They observed him overnight, called me in the morning to say he seemed a bit better, and that they were about to run some tests. Then they suddenly got panicky and said they'd call me right back. Fifteen minutes later they called and said Jackson had passed away as they were sedating him for xrays.

1) He was the mellowest dog ever and would have laid still for anything, why they were sedating him?!?!?! I once had to cut a piece of glass out of his foot and he sat their patiently till I was done, then gave me a big old sloppy lick on the face. Plus they usually make me sign a release, which I hadn't done.

2) Three days later they sent me a bill for $700. I called to ask why so much. They said for the tests. I pointed out that they never ran the tests. They said that I had to pay my bill. I pointed out I wasn't going to pay anything to them for killing my dog. I picked up Jackson later that day and reiterated that I wasn't go to pay them and that they were free to take me to court and that they would never see my shadow darken their door again. Jackson's got a nice spot under a tree now, planted with ferns, bleeding hearts, and hostas.

Well, I never did hear back. I did find a new vet though, and when our 17 year old cat got thyroid cancer this past May, the new vet came out, euthenized her, and left. We never got a bill. We did get a nice card saying how sorry everyone in the office was to hear about our loss.

Vets . . . some are the nicest, kindest folks in the world, others I wouldn't even tap my brakes if they crossed the road in front of me.
