This is exactly my concern. Like this year with anything lavender.. what is being sacrificed in the breed standard just to get a paint job?
Don't get me wrong - I like anything new and different as much as the next guy, and I *do* have several lavender projects going on - but they're PROJECTS, and if I do ever decide to sell any, they will be sold as such, and not because its the current fad. But generally, as with all fads, if you wait long enough, the price will come down. The hard part is finding the ones that don't have any kinks left to be worked out.
Personally, I don't need chickens right off the boat from another country. Sure, it took years to develop those breeds and varieties abroad, but getting them here isn't much more difficult than having cash and connections. The fad will soon fade, and the prices will drop as they become more plentiful, so I'll just admire them from afar until then - maybe longer. But if I'm going to invest my money in a rare and unique breed of poultry to carry on with, its going to be something like Big Medicine's brahmas - 20 years of blood, sweat and tears went into those birds, and he did it for the love of the breed, not to make a quick buck (or several hundred).
