Annual breed fads

Meh, I mean if you're buying into the fad just to make money, that's pretty stupid. On the other hand though, if you really do like the bird and you know you're breaking your bank, I guess it could be okay?

It's always funny to see what breeds turn into fads, I do agree that Chocolate coloured birds are a big contender for next year. Hehe... And I do want some chocolate orpies!

I wanted decent layers with friendly personalties that were hardy. Add a bit of nice coloring for a little eye candy and that's why I ordered the breeds I have. Didn't have to be rare or "hard to get." I didn't realize BLRW were the thing at the time, I just liked the breed and color. I think there will always be folks who have to have the latest--the same with cell phones and other tech toys even though they may never use all the bells and whistles. I just want to be sure they are taken good care of for the duration of their life--not just like a pup whose cuteness gets old or grows too big and then tossed aside.

I would like to add my 2 cents on a couple of things. I also applaud Greenfire for importing different breeds that people seem to want. I can somewhat understand their prices since importing enough breeding stock to have enough diversity must cost a fortune. I can't afford their birds either but someone must be able to since they seem to be selling. As far as "fad" colors are concerned, if I was interested in a given year's "fad" (as I am with lavender this year) I would do a little homework and buy from the people who seem to be really working on improving color and type in a given breed. If what they are asking more than I can afford to just have some in the back yard then I don't buy. Sellers can set their price any way they want but I have the option not to buy (and I am not picking on sellers here, if they are really working a project, that takes a ton of time and money and I can appreciate that). There will always be fads out there and there will be people who will buy them thinking that they will make a ton of money, but if you don't start with a lot of money, then you won't make a lot of money. If you jump on the band wagon in the middle, you are already too late.

I like to hatch and sell chicks in my area, and so far this year the "fad" has been brown leghorn chicks. I advertised a bunch for sale a couple of weeks ago and now have a waiting list of quite a few people waiting on more! I had some RIR chicks at the same time and it took making a good deal where I cut the price down just to move those...

I think high prices actually make the people who want to breed and breed with no regard to standard or stock improvement more likely to buy,.. the higher the auction goes, the more $$$$$ pop up in their minds in regards to value of future progeny.

For one, since I know chickens do funny things like, oh, fall over dead, will not spend $500 or $1000 on a variety I can't show. Proof is in the puddin, and it's proven in the show.

Now, if someone wants me to work on something I will trade or exchange stock with the idea being no eggs or chicks will be sold until they are closer to meeting standards.

I guess I'm kinda a meat and potato gal, give me my black, whites, blues, and buffs before anything else.

I absolutely agree that I would not spend that sort of money on a breed that you can't show.. wait.. that means its not a breed .. its a color variety.. and that fancy paint job (fancy mutt) is not worth it to me either.

I want something that is a breed and I can show it and a judge can measure the value, not the seller telling me what its worth, but a schooled professional. To my knowledge none of these people selling the 400 pairs of birds have shown or have ever been judges much less are considered by anyone but their pocket book to be a master breeder.

There is a trio on that site for 300, (reserve not met) and you can't even show them.. What is wrong with these people?
